Note that John Goodnight named all of the heirs in perfect birth order except for maybe David who was deceased. John, Joseph and William were the last three named in will. Female R J is missing in will. John Goodnight probably did not overlook Mary A., William #1 “Bill” , John #1 or R J. They probably were either deceased by the time of the “will” or were not the children of Thomas Stockton. R J of 1870 census might be R J Eden, and not an heir of Thomas Stockton.

John Goodnight (who married Mary A. Stockton) was the brother in law of Thomas Stockton. John Goodnight lived next door to Malinda Jane (Stockton) Martindale. Malinda Jane is not mentioned by John Goodnight as a daughter of Thomas in the "will". (Malinda) Jane is mentioned in the obit of Rachel (Stockton) Gilmore as a sister. Both Mary Ann and Malinda Jane were probably raised by their older brother Thomas Stockton. Thomas probably took in both little sisters, and maybe others, see John #1 and William #1 “Bill”. Anna (nee Gilmore) Payne is thought to have written in about 1895 that John and Lucretia died at the Jake Redding place (Morgan County, Illinois). John and Rachel (nee Stockton) Gilmore are shown in the 1850 census of Greene County, Illinois. Rachel is shown as 39 and born in Kentucky. A 1810 plat map of Ill Will Creek, present Clinton County, then Cumberland County, Kentucky shows John Stockton living next to Wyatt Daniel. Marriage records show that John Stockton married Lucretia Daniel in 1805. Living next to John and Wyatt was John Christian. A deed listing the heirs of “Smith Creek” John Stockton in 1825 stated heirs John Stockton and John Christian (who had married one of “Smith Creek” Johns’ daughters) of Overton County, Tennessee.
Davis 1 Stockton was born about 1680, Richard 2 Stockton was born about 1710, Thomas 3 Stockton, Sr., was born about 1740, “Smith Creek” John 4 Stockton was born about 1763, John 5 Stockton was born about 1785, he married Lucretia Daniel and they appear to have had the following children, Thomas 6 Stockton, married 1st Elizabeth Martindale, married 2nd Nancy Fare. John 6 Stockton, mentioned as a brother in Rachel (nee Stockton) Gilmore’s obituary. Elliott 6 Stockton, married 1st Sarah J. Hopper, married 2nd Edy (nee Blythe) Eden, married 3rd Nancy M. Pane. Jackson 6 Stockton, married Nancy York. Rachel 6 Stockton, married John McDaniel Gilmore. Margaret 6 Stockton, mentioned as a sister in Rachel (nee Stockton) Gilmore’s obituary. Sarah “Sally” 6 Stockton, married William McCammet Ince. Mary Ann 6 Stockton, married John Goodnight. and Malinda Jane 6 Stockton, married 1st James Martindale, married 2nd __________ Eden.
  ...
The obituary of Rachel Stockton Gilmore stated that she had a brother John. This John Stockton might be the father of three of the children that Thomas seems to have taken in. Thomas seems to have taken in two of his little sisters, Mary Ann who married John Goodnight, and Malinda Jane who married James Martindale. Thomas also seems to have taken in another Mary A. (born about 1833-34 in Kentucky), a William (#1) and a John (#1). Mary A., William #1 and John #1 might be orphaned children of Rachel’s brother John Stockton (born 1800-1810). It is not known why female R. J. was not in Thomas’ will. Maybe she was also a child that Thomas Stockton took in. The book, A MEMORIAL AND BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY OF JOHNSON AND HILL COUNTIES, 1892, contains an article about G. W. Ince, the son of William M. and Sarah (nee Stockton) Ince. “[William] married Sarah Stockton, who was born in Tennessee in 1809, and died in 1882. Her great-grandfather was the original settler of and named, Stockton valley in Kentucky.” Thomas Stockton, Sr., of Spring Creek was the founder of Stockton’s Valley, present Clinton County, then Cumberland County, Kentucky.
Jerry Stockton -- After Thomas 6 Stockton died in 1864 his widow, Nancy A. (nee Fare) Stockton married Bolen Green Eden in 1866. 1850 census shows Thomas and Elizabeth [nee Martindale]. 1860 census shows Thomas and Nancy [nee Fare]. 1870 census shows Bolen and Nancy [nee Fare - Stockton], along with her children from Thomas Stockton. 1880 census shows Bolen and Nancy [nee Fare - Stockton].
