a. Note:   Birth date may have been 7 or 9 Oct 1806. Nicholas Gooding, son of James and Martha (Alexander) Gooding, married Margaret Cooper, daughter of Council Cooper. FCHSNL Volume 4 pages 1 and 18. Note: I question this since Council Cooper appears to be only 10 years older than Margaret. Or was there an older Council Cooper? Death announcement in The Gazette 14 Nov 1891 (Travisville News) -- Mr. N. GOODING, father of A. A. Gooding died of pneumonia at his late residence near here on Friday night. The Gazette, 11-14-1891 , Travisville News. Death reported in Allardt Gazette on 19 Nov 1891. Had also seen death year as 1894 which appears to be wrong. Obituary in The Gazette 17 Dec 1891 -- NICHOLAS GOODING died of pneumonia November 13, 1891 at his home in Pickett Co., TN near Chanute. He was born October 7 1806 , he leaves a wife, who was born January 30 1803 and four children. A. A. Gooding, Postmaster at Jamestown , three daughters and twelve grandchildren. The youngest child is over 50 years of age. He never used tobacco in any form and had not tasted any spirituous liquor since July 1, 1833 . He was an old line Whig and opposed slavery, although he was born and reared in the south. He voted for Wm. H. Harrison in 1840 and Benj. Harrison in 1888. He had only two sons at the commencement of the late Civil War and they both volunteered in the Federal Army September 1, 1861 . He had two son-in-laws who volunteered in the Federal Army in 1861 and one them and one son died at Andersonville , GA. His father was a soldier in the War of 1812 under General Jackson. He has always been a good law abiding citizen and accommodating neighbor and will long be remembered by his many friends.
