Misc. Notes LUKE HALL WAS BORN IN 1788 TO SAMUEL AND LETITIA HENDRIX HALL. AGNES CLAIMS LUKE WAS BORN IN JEFFERSON CO., TENN., BUT THAT COUNTY DIDN'T EXIST IN 1788. LUKE AND BROTHER, DAVID AND GARRETT, SERVED IN THE WAR OF1812. LUKE AND DAVID SERVED ONLY THREE MONTHS. GARRETT SERVED TWO HOURS OF DUTY. ON OCTOBER 13, 1812, LUKE WED AGNES COX. THEY WERE MARRIED BY JUSTICE OFTHE PEACE, JOHN CAMMAL, AT THE HOME OF "THE WIDOW COX" (AGNES' MOTHER,PHOEBE COX). THEIR MARRIAGE BOND IS ON RECORD AT THE ROANE COUNTY COURTHOUSE. SAMUEL HALL SIGNED THE BOND AS SURETY. IT WAS IN THE AMOUNT OF$12.50. LUKE AND AGNES SETTLED IN THE SOUNTHWEST CORNER OF MORGAN COUNTY, NEAR THE FENTRESS AND CUMBERLAND CO. LINE. PART OF THE ORIGINAL LAND MAY HAVE BEEN IN THOSE COUNTIES. LUKE WAS A SLAVE OWNER. IN THE HISTORY OF MORGAN CO. PAGE 52, "IN DEED BOOK ABE PAGE 141, DATED FEBRUARY 11, 1828, ONE FINDS A BILL OF SALE FROM BENJAMIN ARENDILL OF GRANVILLE COUNTY, NORTH CAROLINA, TO LUKE HALL. LISTED IS A NEGRO WOMAN NAMED IBY, ABOUT TWENTY YEARS OLD, WITH A GIRL CHILD NAMED DELANA, ABOUT ONE YEAR OLD." THE OWNER OF A TAVERN ALONG THE KNOXVILLE-NASHVILLE ROAD, LUKE WAS A COLORFUL CHARECTER. NOT ONLY DID HE PROVIDE FOOD AND LODGING FOR HIS CUSTOMERS, HE SUPPLIED THEM WITH ENTERTAINMENT IN THE FORM OF FIGHTS. ONE ACCOUNT, GIVEN BY A DECENDANT, CHARLIE HALL, TELLS OF MEN COMING A GREAT DISTANCE TO CHALLENGE LUKE TO FIST FIGHTS, WITH LUKE ALWAYS BEING THE WINNER. ACCORDING TO THE HISTORY OF MORGAN COUNTY, (PAGE 303), LUKE WAS GRANTED A LICENCE TO OPERATE AN "ORDINARY HOUSE", JANUARY 16, 1827. FROM STATEMENTS LUKE MADE IN HIS PENSION FILE, HE WASN'T A PERSON WHO WOULD COMPROMISE HIS PRINCIPLES. HE DREW A PENSION FOR HIS SERVICE IN THE WAR OF 1812, AND ALSO RECIEVED TO PARCELS OF BOUNTY LAND. WHEN THE CIVIL WAR BROKE OUT, LUKE VOTED FOR SECESSION, HE MADE PUBLIC STATEMENTS THAT HE WAS A SOUTHERN MAN, AND IF TENNESSEE LEFT THE UNION, HE WOULD GO TO. AND "IF THE WHOLE NORTH WOULD COME THERE, HE WOULD TELL THEM SO." AFTER THE WAR WAS OVER, AN INVESTIGATION WAS MADE. FROM STATEMENTS GIVEN BY HIS NEIGHBORS AND HIMSELF, IT WAS DETERMINED THAT LUKE WAS A REBEL. HE WAS DROPPED FROM PENSION ROLLS FOR DIASLOYALTY. IN HIS OWN STATEMENT HE SAID HE AT FIRST FAVORED THE SOUTH, BECAUSE HE WAS A SOUTHERN MAN, BUT THAT LATER, HE FAVORED NEITHER SIDE. LUKE'S PENSION WAS RE-INSTATED AFTER HE SIGNED AN OATH OF ALLEGIENCE TO THE UNITED STATES. LUKE'S SON, DAVID, WAS A UNION SOLDIER AND HIS SON, JOHN, A CONFEDERATE SOLDIER. THERE WAS SOME ENSTRANGEMENT AMONG MEMBERS OF THE HALL FAMILY OVER THE CIVIL WAR. AFTERWARD, EVEN CLOSE KIN DIDN'T CLAIM TO BE RELATED. THIS CREATES SOME DIFFICULTY IN DETERMINING WHO BELONGS TO WHO NOW. AT THE TIME OF HIS INLISTMENT IN THE WAR OF 1812, LUKE WAS TWENTY-FOUR YEARS OLD AND SIX FEET TALL, WITH BLACK HAIR AND BLACK EYES. DURING THE TIME OF HIS SERVICE HE DREW 40C (FOURTY CENTS) A DAY ALLOWANCE FOR USING HIS OWN HORSE. AT THAT RATE, HIS HORSE DREW MORE PAY THAN LUKE. THE PENSION HE DREW LATER IN LIFE WAS FOR EIGHTY DOLLARS PER MONTH. LUKE WAS IN GOOD HEALTH UNTIL SHORTLY BEFORE HE DIED AT AGE 90, ON MAY 2, 1878. AGNES COX HALL GAVE HER AGE WITH GREAT DISCREPTANCY, BUT IT APPEARS THAT SHE WAS BORN IN 1795. THE LAST PAPER IN HER PENSION RECORD FILE WAS DATED APRIL, 1879, SO SHE DIED SOMETIME AFTER THAT. NOT MUCH IS KNOWN OF AGNES COX HALL'S FAMILY. THE 1850 CENSUS LISTS PHEBE COX, AGE 86, (BORN 1764), LIVING WITH LUKE AND AGNES. WE ASSUME SHE WAS THE MOTHER OF AGNES. LUKE AND AGNES ARE BURIED IN THE HALL CEMETERY ON CHESTNUT RIDGE, IN MORGAN COUNTY, TENNESSEE. THE GRAVES ARE MARKED WITH FIELD STONES AND THERE IS SOME HAND CARVED INSCRIPTION THAT IS UNREADABLE. THEIR OLD HOME STOOD NEAR THE ROAD ALONG ROUTE 62, BETWEEN WARTBURG AND CLARKRANGE. THIS WAS ONCE KNOWN AS THE KNOXVILLE-NASHVILLE ROAD. A PHOTO OF LUKE'S EARLY HOME IS FAETURED ON PAGE 103 OF "THE HISTORY OF MORGAN COUNTY."
