Smith and Barbara June ______. Gearlie Byrd -- [email protected] -- My uncle, James Cordell Byrd, told about Balaam Smith and his brother Henry Smith killing Porter Pryor and Will Gillentine January 1,1919. As a matter of fact I now own the property where the killing took place. Porter Pryor was the son of Parker Pryor and his first wife.(not sure of her name)
Livingston Enterprise - Nov. 10, 1933 - Pickett Man Arrested in 1933 for1919 Murder: Balaam Smith was placed in jail here at Byrdstown duringThursday on murder charges for a killing fourteen years ago. He wasjailed to await trial at the next term of Circuit Court for the fatalstabbing of Porter Pryor in 1919. Smith and his brother, Henry, weresentenced to the penitentiary for the murder of Will Gillentine in 1919at the same time of the Pryor murder. Balaam was released from the statepenitentiary in 1930 on parole. Henry was committed to the insane asylumat Knoxville a few years ago and is still there. An indictment on thePryor murder was released at the June term of the court in 1932, butSmith had managed to evade officers.
