Notes
a. Note:   arched Wilson Co., TN birth records fro 1881-1911. No Ed Cole found.
!DEATH: He was buried in Elmwood Cemetery. Died at Hillman Emergency Hospital (University Hosp.?) after being hit by a truck while walking across the street.
Obit. appeared in B'ham News, 12 Apr., 1964, p. A23. Says he was a retired salesman who died after being brushed by a car Saturday. Says he was a native of Liverpool, England (He only visited. Curt) but lived most of his life in B'ham. Survived by Edward Cole of Bay St. Louis, MS; James Cole of Trussville; Louis Cole of MS; Brandt Cole of B'ham; Mrs. James Potts of Montevallo; & Mrs. Sam Shehee of Dallas, TX.; 12 grandchildren & several sisters & brothers. James Cole it is thought gave the info. to the paper.
Death certificate says: name of hospital Hillman Emergency. Usual residence 4024 1st Ave. N, B'ham. Married. DOB 5-12-1882, Nashville, TN. Father's name James Monroe Cole. Mother's Jennings. Informant's name is wife Catherine M. Cole. Cause of death was "unknown natural cause." Burial at Elmwood.
!LIFE: I have copy of his social security application, dated 10-18-37. It states his address as 908 So. 16 St., B'ham. He's 55. DOB is 5-12-82 in Nashville, TN. Father's name Monroe Cole. Mother's Annie Jennings.
The B'ham City Dir., 1901, p. 225, lists "Edward L. Cole, wks So Bell T & TCo, r 2112 humboldt ave". Also listed on the same page is "Annie Cole (wid J M), r 2112 Humboldt ave". Apparently Annie lived with Edward. Nobody had ever mentioned to me the possibility that Annie lived in B'ham. I assumed she lived & died in TN. Also, Emma Mandlebaum is at that address, so Ed & Annie were probably living in Emma's house. Her husband had died a year or two earlier.
Was an electrician, and a protestant, according to his second marriage license, issued 1916, Mobile, Alabama. First marriage license says he was a lineman.
Lived in Liverpool, England at start of WWI (family lore).
Draft registration, dated 12 Sept., 1918, says he was a woodworking machinist, employed in Chickasaw, Mobile county, by the Chickasaw Shipbuilding Company. His address was Box 3, Plateau, and his nearest relative was Winna K. Cole (His wife Catherine Winifred, he called her Winnie). Age 36. Born May 12, 1882. Black hair, brown eyes, slender build, medium height.
Lived in Waxahatchee, TX & Sulphur, LA after marriage to Catherine, says Ed, Jr. Margaret says Catherine cleaned offices there. Had to repeatedly return a watch to a man she thought intentionally left it, because he liked to see her. (Info. from Sue Howell's Jennings chart says that Margaret E. Davis, daughter of Margaret E. Davis & Tarpley Green Logue, Jr., was born in Waxahatchie, TX.)
Margaret says she heard that Edward was named after Gen. Robert E. Lee.
Ed Jr. says his dad was in Liverpool when WWII began. His British girlfriend asked if he was going to fight for her. He said "certainly". He caught the first ship he could back to the states!
Ed Jr. also said: his dad went to Hendersonville & Gallatin often when young, & swam in the Cumberland R.; Once, he was riding a horse across a creek & the horse threw him; Says he had two horses named Charlie & Honey Bell; He worked for R. M. Rose Co. as a liquor salesman; Was in Waxahatchee, Tx sometime, & he & Catherine were in Sulphur, LA at one point; He had a brother named David (Davy?) who owned a restaurant; Says he thinks Ed Sr. had brothers named Billie, Henson, David, John, Marshall (lawyer), Roy, Walter Davis (Texas), half sisters Emma, Maggie, Ethel & Nannie.
Marg. Potts said Jim Potts Sr. had a recorded interview with Ed Sr. from about 1964. That recording hasn't been found.
Have a photo of him with a date stamped on the face of it 17 Jun 1915 along with the words "registration office". This photo, presumably a passport photo, was hidden behind a photo of Ed and Catherine, apparently a wedding photo, that Margaret had. She said Ed worked his way to England. Have also heard that he ran out of money over there & worked his back back to U.S. on a freighter.
The Mobile City Dir. for 1922 lists: Cole Edward L (Catherine) clk Am Lndry Co h 9 Espejo. Not listed in the '20 or '24 dir. The '21 & '23 were missing.
The 1952 B'ham city dir. lists "Cole, Edw L jr int dec Arthur Co r4512 1st av N". Also listed at that address are Ed sr. & James O.
 The 1962 directory lists "Edw L (Cath W) h4024 1st Ave N"
A loose paper I have, possibly from the Mt. Juliet Lib., which I labeled Davis Doc., says that after James E. Davis died, wife Ann married a Cole & had one son, Eddie Cole. "He came to Texas & visited the James Walter Davis family many years ago."
!PHYSICAL.: Physical characteristics: His draft registration, a copy of which I have, indicates he was of medium height, slender build, brown eyes & black hair. His marriage license, dated 2 June, 1916, says he was 30 years old, 5'7.5" tall, 141 pounds.
!CENSUS: 1930 census indicates Edward L. Cole, 47, born in TN, and who's parents were born in TN, lived in a rented house for $18/month, on 41st St. in Birmingham, Ala.. Also listed there was wife Katherine 35, daughters Margaret E. and Grace D., 9, sons Edward L., 6, James O., 3 10/12, and Burnell, 10/12. Edward worked as a truck driver for a bakery, and was not a veteran. (census T626, roll 30, e.d. 37-101, sht.26-A, family #336).
1920. Checked 1920 Ala. Soundex for Edward, Ed, Eddie, Lee, Catherine, E, E L, Leona. Nothing found. Twins born Nov. 6, 1920 in B'ham. Ed & Cath. listed at 2716 6th av s in 1920 B'ham City Dir.. Not listed in 1919 dir..
1910 Robt. Co., TN census, ED 165, sh. 3, lists an Eddie D. Cole, 27, enumerated with Edgar Weaver. Probably not ours. Searched Jeff. Co., AL Soundex. No luck.
1900 Jeff. Co., Ala. Soundex searched but no ELC found.
Note:   !BIRTH: Draft registration says he was born 12 May 1882, & was native of Tenn. Ed/Dot Cole se
