Notes
a. Note:   d. in Plateau, Ala., for 30 years. Born Lloyds Station, (Formerly Bailey's Mill) Florida on Feb. 4, 1862. Informant was Miss I Mason of Plateau. He died 3/8/37 at 4:00 a.m., mainly of arteriosclerosis after a 28-day illness that was aggravated by hypertension. Had hemoplegia and then a cerebral hemorage. His father was Louis Mason & mother was Winifred Davis (Other info I have seems to indicate his father was Adam Whitfield & mother Mary Winifred Pipkin. That source indicates his mother's parents were Lewis Pipkin & Elizabeth White Davis.) Higgins was undertaker. Have photo of headstones, Pinecrest Cem., Mobile, section 6, lot 48. Names on them spelled Herbert O. & Banie.
Obit. in The Mobile Register, 1937, p. 12., lists Hubbard O. Mason of Lloyds Station, FL. Resident of Plateau for the past 30 years. Survivors are one son, Louis of Richmond, Mrs. E L Cole of B'ham, Miss Ivor Mason of Plateau, 3 brothers, 2 sisters.
Herbert's bible, in possesion of Louise & Lenora Tanner as of June, 2003, records his birth place as Old Lloyd Station, Florida.
IGI, May 2003, & Pipkin Family website shows Herbert in a family headed by Adam Whitfield Mason. Curt thinks this info. is correct & the parents listed on the death certificate are in error. Mary Ivor must have confused Herbert's maternal grandparents with his parents. The website gives a birthdate of 2-4-1861, one year earlier than the death certificate. His bible says ____________.
!KIDS: 1900 census; Margaret Potts. Name spelled Herbert on headstone.
!LIFE: Death cert. says he was teammaster at a sawmill.
According to the census he lived in Butler Co. in 1900 & in Mobile in 1910. Checked the List of Registered Voters, LG 2620, reel 17, Butler Co., Ala. from 1902 on. No H O Mason listed. 1924 Mobile City Directory, P 714, lists "Mason Herbert O (Banie) lab res Plateau Ala." I take it this means he's a laborer residing in Plateau.
Curt has warranty deed from Mobile co., Ala., Deed Bk. 183, p. 425, listing sale of plot of land 50' x 150' along the W side of Telegraph Rd. Bought from Mrs. Virginia R. George for $350 on 2 Sept., 1919.
Earliest listing for him in the Mobile City Dir. appears to be 1924 when it lists: Mason Herbert o (Banie) lab res Plateau Ala. In 1928 he & Banie are listed as farmer in house on Telegraph Rd. near Maher Av, Plateau. '29 says same except near George instead of Maher. In '30 it reads: Mason Herbert O (Luvenia) gdnr house on Telegraph Rd, Plateau. Mary I Mason also has a listing on Telegraph as saleswoman, renter. '32 reads: Mason Herbert O (Mary) h ws Telegraph Rd, Plateau. '35 reads: Mason Herbert O (Lavinia) h Telegraph Rd, Plateau. '36 & '37 read: Mason Herbert O h ws Telegraph Rd. Plateau. "h" means house, as opposed to "r" renting. "ws" means west side. Some directories are missing & for whatever reason he is not listed in some intervening years.
!MARR: 1930 Mobile city director lists Luvenia with Herbert. Could this be Banie's other given name? Record of marriage in Levy co., FL indicates Herbert O Mason and Bannie Phillips married there Wednesday 14 Oct., 1885. The 1880 census seems to match with this and other info. I have copy of license.
!CENSUS: Have 1930 federal census for Mobile co., Ala., township 3, precinct 9, Whistler and Plateau, taken on April 24. It lists Herbert Mason, 67, a truck gardener(?). He owns his home, valued at $1200. Not listed as a farm. He was 25 when first married. He was born FL, his dad in Carolina, his mom in NC. Herbert's wife Bonnie, 67, also lives with him. She was 22 when first married. From FL, as was her dad. Her mom born in GA. No occupation. Their daughter Mary Ivor, 40, lives with them. She is single. Her occupation is difficult to read.
1920 census lists Hubbard O Mason, 58, with wife Bennie, 58 & dau. Iva, 30, in Whistler, Mobile co., Ala., renting a home. He's a teamster at a lumber co. Says he was b. NC, his parents US.
1910 census, Mobile co. lists Herbert O., 48, renting home on Telegraph Rd. He's been married 24 years. Born NC, parents US. He's a wagon driver doing general hauling. Wife Banie & 3 kids with him.
1900 census for Butler co., Ala., Greenville, e.d 20, sh. 14, 11 June, lists Herbert, 38, born Feb. 1862 in FL (sic). Dad b. GA, mom Ala.. He's renting a house, not a farm. Can read & write. With wife & kids.
The 1885 FL state census lists H. O. Mason in Levy Co., FL.
The 1880 census shows a H. O. Mason, 18, living with the L. Bozeman family in Levy co., FL, precinct 4. He is not related. Is a laborer born in NC as were both parents. I believe this is our Herbert Oscean since there is a marriage record in Levy co. indicating Herbert O. Mason married Bannie Phillips Oct. 14, 1885. I got Bonie's maiden name from her death certificate (or maybe Mary Ivor's).
1870 FL census, M593, #131 (Jefferson Co.?) lists Adam W. Mason & Mary W. at Bailey's Mill P.O., which later became Lloyd or Lloyd's Station.(This info matches death certificate.)
!MISC: "Butler Co. Births & Deaths, 1894-1898" has a couple of interesting entries. One is Apr. 22, 1894, white female, born Greenville, mother(?) Josephine Mason, Georgia, father(?) H O Mason, Florida, mechanic, certificate # 1. Another is June 23, 1894, white female, born Greenville, mother(?) Clara Mason, white, Florida, father(?) H O Mason, Florida, machinist, white, certificate #6. It's presumed by Curt that the names are the parents, but did H O father two girls from two different women two months apart? Winnie was born May 23 & her mother's name was Banie, possibly other given name Lavenia (from Mobile City Dir.).
Note:   !BIRTH-DEATH: Death cert. acquired 23 Mar., 1992, says Hubbard (sic) had lived on Telegraph R
