Note: s last mention of him. The 1900 Nashville dir. lists Annie Cole (wid of J M) at 94 Peabody. Do we have land records of him after 1880? Family lore is that Ed Cole left, didn't contact home, & when he returned his dad had been dead for sometime. So he probably died about 1897-1899. No will found in Wilson will books vol. C, D or Robt. co. for period 1895-1900. Checked the Robt. co. Index to Deeds, roll 1, vol 2 1879-1907. No J. M. Cole. Found a James Cole 1897, bk 43, p 81 & 118, but those transactions took place in 1870s. Check Nash. City Dir. prior to 1900 for him. Copy marriage license JMC to Eliz. Henry, 2 Dec 1847, Robt. Co.. !ORIG: Margaret Potts had knowledge that this was her grandfather's name. Sue Howell also confirmed that James Cole was father of James Cole, and had his birthdate. !BIRTH: Place of birth from death cert. of Leroy Cole. !MARR: To Eliz. Henry, from "35,000 TN Mar. Records." Have copy of license for James M. & Mrs. Ann Davis, from Book of Marriages, 1866-1875, p. 149, license # 99. Married to Ann in Wilson co. !KIDS: Curt has have copy of guardianship papers from Chancery court for David, John, Leroy and Marshall Cole. They mention Elizabeth Henry. Dated 1874 to 1886? George R. Scott listed as guardian for the boys, although at the final settlement for David, Mar. 5, 1885, J T H Scott is listed as his guardian. !MIL: Note from Dot C. says no record of James M Cole in Civil War Soldiers book in Springfield Lib. !CENS: 1880 census, Wilson co., TN, lists J. M. Cole, 53, a farmer. He was b. TN, his dad NC, mom SC. With him are his wife Ann, 40 & Davis kids (i.e. her's), Walter J., 21, Emma, 17, Maggie, 15, Samuel, & 13, Sarah Etha, 10. 1880 census shows a black family living a few houses up from J. M. Cole. They are: Josh Cole, 51; wife Ann (mulatto); kids Marshall, Silvia, Wm. Amos, Burrel, David, Betty, & cousin Stephen. Could Josh be a former slave of J. M.'s? 1870 census for Nashville, Davidson co., TN lists Monroe Cole, 45, a farm laborer b. TN. With him are Wm. & Henderson. Next door is a black family headed by Josua Cole, 27, with wife Eliza, 27, & kids John, Marshall & Emma. 1860 Springfield, Robertson co., TN census, roll 1270, sh. 287, p 31, family 218, lists J. M. Cole, 35, a farmer with $4,000 in real estate & $5,415 in personal property. He was born in TN. Elizabeth, 28, & 5 kids live with him. He has 7 slaves. 1850 census for Robertson co., TN lists farmer James M. Cole, 25, who owns real estate valued at $1,000. Born TN. Elizabeth & kids listed with him, as well as James & Susan, 62 & 56. !LIFE: I have copy of land purchase recorded in Robertson co., TN, book 5, p. 61. James Seal sold 165 acres to James M. Cole for $300. Recorded on 3 Feb., 1846. The property was on the road leading from Springfield to the White house. Boundaries noted by white oak, black oak, black gum, etc. Another entry, in book 9, p. 384, Robertson co., seems to be just a survey, maybe of the same property. Indicates 169 acres crossing the pringfield Rd. In book 10, p. 313?, David Henry sold to James M. Cole on 10 Mar., 1858, for $2550, land on Beaver Dam Creek & Dry Fork & bounded by Durrett, Stone, Walton, David Henry. Property totals 150 acres. In early 1866, J. W. was having money trouble. In deed book 13, p. 394-6, he lists the numerous people he owes. He transfers 235 acres of land and various stock animals and food stores to H. M. Pitt as trustee. He gives Pitt the power to sell them if J. W. doesn't pay the debts by 1 Nov., 1868. I have transcribed this in a Word document. In Jan. 1867 J. W. sells 640 acres to David Henry for $3910. In early 1869 Pitt sells at auction the 235 acres he was holding in trust for J. W., since J. W. had not paid off his debts. Apparently his father James Cole bought it for $300. Pitt also sells the other things he held in trust. I have a copy of that inventory, p. 344, what book I know not but it's for the April Term of the court. Later, James sold the land, twice! Don't know what that was about. A list of patients of Dr. James Mulloy, covering 1849-1858, taken from the Jean Durrett Collection, Springfield Lib., lists a number of Coles, including Monroe, Stephen & John.
