Newspaper unknown. Says he was 84. Funeral at Marshall Funeral Home. Died of heart attack in a local nursing home, after several years of failing health. Was a traveling salesman for Dun & Bradstreet and several other companies. He also operated the restaurant for Cain-Sloan and Company. Native of Nashville, was the son of the late Monroe and Elizabeth Cole. Wife was Hannah Hays, who died nine years earlier. Member of Trinity Methodist Church. Only survivors are nieces and nephews. Some pallbearers were Marshall Cole, Will Cole, John L. Jennings, A. D. Cole, Brandt Cole, O. F. Howell, and Bert Cole. Note from David Howell says James David & Hannah had no kids. Gustine Agee says same. !CENS: 1870 census for Springfield, Robertson co., TN lists David, 7 with James. 1880 census for Davidson co., TN lists a John D. Cole, 15, living in his brother William's household. Listed as student. Since the age matches the person I have listed as James David, I assume they are the same.See search note. 1900 census for Davidson co., TN (viewed by Dot Cole) lists a James D. Cole, 35, b Feb. 1865, living as boarder on Vine St., Nashville. (1900 Nashville City Dir. lists a James D. Cole, salesman at 307 N Market, has a home at 1220 N Vine.) !LIFE: Have copy of receipt, dated 5 Apr., 1886, that J. D.(?) Cole signed for $423.59, received from Dr. J.T.H. Scott, his guardian. This was probably when he turned 21. It is apparently from the estate of his grandfather David Henry, who was the father of Elizabeth Henry, his mother. James Cole, Sr. (b. 1926) said in 1990 that E. L. Cole, Sr. & brother David met in the 1940s after not having seen each other in 42 years.
