Notes
a. Note:   !ORIG:Whitley (COLS10) !ORIG: I came up with this person without knowing James Monroe Cole's parents names or any other data. But this person appeared in the same household with James Monroe in the 18?? census. Because of the age difference I assumed they are father and son.
!BIRTH: The 1850-1870 census records give conflicting birthdates based on his
stated age, varying from 1784 to 1788. Judge Cole, in info. in the Whitley
 collection, states the included age.
!DEATH: Info. from the Jean M. Durrett collection, file #27, William Jones Day Book at Springfield Lib., says he died on this date, near 90 years old.
!LIFE: James apparently couldn't read or write, since he made his mark on deeds dated 25 Oct., 1877, & 30 July, 1872.
I have a copy of a map showing the Cole property in Robertson co., TN. James Cole Sr. is in the center. West & next to him on one side is Stephen Jr., then Champ T., then John H. East of James Sr. is Peter. North of Peter is William Alex. Cole, then Stephen Sr. Old Kentuck Rd. (Lexington Rd.) runs through the last three.Together they own at least 1280 acres near the headwaters of the Sulphur Fork of Red River.
Deed book 4, p. 81, Robertson co, TN has a deed where James Cole bought, for $50, land on the Sulphur Fork of the Red River from Gabriel Choate. It ws recorded on 10 Apr. 1843, although it appears to have been bought in 1831. The very next entry, on p. 82, indicates Gabriel sold about 150 acres to James Cole for $100. It was bounded by James England, Charles Stewart, & Choate. Payton's Fork ran thru the property. Recorded 10 Apr. 1843.
Book 4, p. 108 shows that James Cole sold 50 acres to Powhatan Choat for $50 on 13 Jan., 1838. It was recorded on 5 June, 1845. The land was on the Sulphur Fork of the Red River & contained a branch as well.
Book 18, p. 507, Robertson co., is a deed where James Cole sells 81 acres to J. H.? Warren for $100. This is dated 25 Oct., 1877. This Warren may have been Nancy Cole's husband.
Book 43, p. 118, Robt. co. is a deed whereby Mathew Cole sold 56 acres to James Cole for $200, on 2 June 1876? The land was in dist. 11 & bounded by a widow's place & Erwin. I have copies of these deeds.
Robt. Co., TN tax records noted by Ed/Dot Cole indicate a J. M. Cole paid taxes on land (235 acres?) from at least as early as abt. 1865 (Dist. 10, p. 47). There is an entry for Monroe Cole, p. 134 (on 230 acres?). In 1869 is a listing for James Cole Sr. (235 ac.?). In 1872 there is James Cole Jr. (46 ac.?). In 1876, dist. 11, is Jas. Cole (56 ac.?). In 1880 a James Cole has 56 acres. In 1881 a James Cole has 81 acres. James Cole Sr. is listed in 1882 for 81(?) ac. Other Coles are also listed on these 3 pages of notes.

With him is Susanna and T. J. W. Cole, 19, a farm hand born TN. Neighbors are James A. Jernigan & John S. Durrett. Next page is headed either Byres Spgs. or Tyree Spgs., so James may have lived about halfway between the two places.
