Notes
a. Note:   o near Nashville, as family lore stated. There I came up with James Cole. A collection of Coles living side by side leads me to the conclusion they are my ancestors. Stephen is the oldest of the group by enough to make him the father of the bunch. His will confirms that.
!KIDS: Names of kids & birth dates also from a notebook page apparently from Judge R. S. Cole, Tulsa, Oklahoma, 1954.
!MAR: Edith Whitley collection, Franklin, TN.
!BIRTH: In Stephen's pension application, he states that he was born in Anson co., NC, in 1760. His brother James states, as a witness, that Stephen entered service, in 1776, in that portion of Anson co. that later became Richmond co. Therefore, it's probable that Stephen was born in what is now Richmond co. Data in Richmond County (NC) Hist. Collection gives exact date of birth.
!DEATH: Death date arrived from Stephen's Rev. War pension papers. A man, S. P. Cole, of Nashville, states in 1887 that his great-grandfather, Stephen Cole, fought in the Revolution, moved from N. C. to Robertson co. Tenn. in 1806, where he died June 5th, 1840, leaving ten children. This info. fits with my Stephen's will, in which he names his ten children. The will was probated July 6th, 1840, in Robertson co.
Have copy of both his will & estate inventory. Will has been transcribed, inventory has not. The latter lists his slaves by name, livestock, tools, grain, etc., who purchased them, & the amount paid. He gave his son James a negro named Joe & one named Aimy.
!LIFE: Stephen was mentioned in numerous land transactions. A copy of one that Curt Cole has, numbered 779 in a book he assumes to be a Robertson co. deed book, states that Stephen Cole Senr deeded 216 acres to James Cole. Two witnesses appeared in court 10 Aug., 1835 to acknowledge the transaction. Number 965 is a deed of gift from Stephen Cole to Martha Jones for 2 negroes. Dated 12 Nov. 1835.
!MIL: Stephen served in the NC Militia fighting Cherokee before the Rev. War, then again during the Revolutionary War, herding cattle for the troops. More info. about him is in my Word document. An 1835 list of Tennessee pensioners was printed in 1835 by Duff Green. It states "Stephen Cole, Robertson county, Private-Captain, North Carolina line, $253.33 annual allowance $759.99, amount received Jan. 8, 1834, Pension started age 75."
Note:   !ORIG: No family lore pointed to a Stephen Cole as an ancestor. I tracked James Monroe Cole t
