New Evansport Cemetery Defiance Co, OH Solomon Coy was born in Springfield Twp., Williams (now Defiance) Co, OH on 4-11-1832. His early years were spent working in the "Coy & Snider" mill that his father partly owned, and operated. Mary Ann Kintigh was born on 3-5-1831 in Mt Pleasant, Westmoreland Co, PA. Around 1835 she and her family moved to Williams (now Defiance) Co, OH. She lived on her family's farm until her marriage. Solomon and Mary Ann were married in Williams Co., OH on 8-11-1853 by E. Spangler. Solomon was 21 years old, and Mary Ann was 22. After their marriage Solomon purchased 80 acres in R4E T6 S34. The plot of land is the southeastern corner of that section, sharing it's eastern and southern border with Evansport (the town named after her grand-father John, and great-uncle Isaac Evans). Their children (in order of age) where: John Oliver, Ellen B., Franklin D., Charles L., Thomas Ellsworth, and James Edward. The couple made their home there and raised 6 children. It remained their home until their deaths. Solomon served with many other men of Springfield Twp. in the 121st Ohio Volunteer Infantry Regiment(Ohio Volunteer Militia) during the Civil War. There is no documentation known of his service at this time. Almost every example of the records for a Civil War soldier consists of one document, the muster roll that was completed when the soldiers were discharged. The muster roll was used for the payment of pensions. It was very common for men to go home, without completing this paperwork, after their discharge. It was also common, early in the war, for men to serve in the militias of neighboring states. Solomon's was one such example. His family later remembered him as a veteran of the war, and there is an existing "tintype" photograph of him in a Union uniform. These facts show beyond a reasonable doubt, that he served in the Civil War. He perhaps only served a 3 month period of service, maybe in the beginning of the War in 1861. All that is known of Solomon's life after his return from military service, is that he made his living farming the family's land. Solomon died on 3-10-1882 at the age of 49. After Solomon's death Mary Ann remarried to Thomas Turney on 9-6-1891. She died in 1919 and was buried next to Solomon in New Evansport Cemetery. 1850-Census Ohio Springfield,Williams Co.,Ohio-pg 425/434 ************************************************************************** ************************* 1880-Census Index-Ohio Springfield Twp.,Williams Co. pg .679C ************************************************************************** ************************* Info from David Coy http://www.ddc.com/~decoy/gen8.htm#l16 My website dedicated to the family: http://connie_coy.tripod.com/coyfamilyhistory/
