a. Note:   "Mariah Catherine Edwards, eldest child of Jefferson and Louisa (Cockrell) Edwards, was b. 19 Oct. 1840, Monroe Twp, Licking Co. near Columbus, Franklin Co. Ohio. While no record of Mariah's birth has been found, the 1840 federal census show the family living in Monroe Twpship, Licking County. Family records show that Mariah's younger brother, Thomas, was born in Licking Co. 6 Aug. 1842
  William Conklin and Mariah Edwards were married 4 mar. 1857, Jackson Co. Iowa. In 1860 they were living in Brandon Twp. and by 1870 had relocated to Farmers Creek Twp. William and Mariah had thirteen children. Peter Jackson, the eldest, was b. 8 Jun 1858, Thomas Jefferson, William James "Chunk", Russell Japeth, who died 5 mar. 1878, at Iron Hill, Edorthey Jane "Eda", Franklin John, Rueben Patrick, Lewis Nathaniel, Ida May, Michael Centennial, Frederick John "Fritz", Mary Olive, and Mariah Catherine, the youngest, 5 June 1884. The 1885 Iowa State Census reflects the fact that all of their children were in Jackson Co. Also at sometime Mariah discovered that her name should have been spelled Maria. To date the name has been traced been to 1805. Mariah's mother, Louisa, had a sister, Maria, b. in 1834. We know that her name was spelled Maria and pronounced Mariah. The 1850 Delaware Co. census records Moriah, living with her parents, Peter and Hannah Cockrell. After Peter died in 1864, the family with the exception of Louisa, signed a deed conveying some land. From the record it appears that all could their name, including Louisa's mother, Hannah, and Maria's signature was Maria Cockrell. Peter Cockrell also had a sister, Maria, b. 22 Dec. 1805, To date, we have no beginning for this story."
