Note: The progenitor, Eli Edwards, b.c. 1760, came from New York or Vermont, c. 1805, settled in what was then Luzerne Co. PA, but is now Wyoming Co. PA. He was first listed in 1810, Tunkannock Twp census as past 45, his wife, 26/45, two males 16/26, one male 10/16; one male under 10; 3 females under 10; one female, 10/16. He lived for some 90 yrs in relative obscurity, leaving little behind in the way of public records. His descendants are now doubtless quite numerous, since he had 116 grandchildren and at least 50 great grandchildren by 1850. Eli and Hannah lived in New York until after the Rev. War, then moved to Luzerne County, Penn. Eli was a shoemaker near Wilkes Barrey, Penn. In 1826 they moved to Delaware County, Iowa. Eli was a veteran of the Rev. War. The 1850 census lists Eli 86, Hannah 78. They are buried in Jackson County, Iowa, possibly Willison cemetery. Jerome Wiltsee Sr. "A Memoir of Philip Maton Wilsie & His Descendants" (Atchinson, Kansas, 1908) stated that Thomas Wilsie and his wife, Elizabeth Carey moved from New York to Pownal, Vermont, circa 1782. They had a dau. Hannah, b. 1772, but according to this history, she married Joseph Osborn. Marriage also noted in Elmer I Shepard, Berkshire Gen. Notes, #0" Marriage in Pownal, Vermont, to 1850 (Williamshire, Mass, Dec. 1941). Since no Wilsie family was found in Bertshire Co. Mass. it might be assumed that the groom was a resident of Berkshire Co. although the converse may be the case. Historical record cards at the Bennington Museum, Bennington, Vermont, dated 1875, lists an Elijah Edwards, his wife, Elizabeth;, son, Eli Jr., James, and Benajah, daus., Hulda and Sarah. The Berkshire Co. records reveal an Elijah Edwards, b.c. 1754, who served in the Rev. War from Lenox in 1780/1; a Daniel & William Edwards living in Richmond and descendants of the Rev. Jonathan Edwards living in Stockbridge, although any connection between the latter and this family is very unlikely. Eli Edwards was not listed in 1800 census of New York or Vermont, nor does anyone of the name show up in the 1800 census of Berkshire Co. Mass. An Elijah Edwards with a large family was listed in Otsego Co. NY, near him was Daniel Edwards who had moved from Shaftsbury, Vermont, c. 1793. The Luzerne Co. Deed Bk 14, pp. 114/116, shows that in 1812 Eli and Elijah Edwards, a yeomen, purchased 120 acres of land from Asabel Atherton for $1200 cash. They sold the land the following year, the grantor deed was signed by Eli Edwards and Hannah, his wife, and by Elijah Edwards and Ruth, his wife. Eli Edwards lived in Luzerne Co. until about 1826 when he and his family moved to Delaware Co. Ohio. Delaware Co.'s records were destroyed by a fire before 1835 and all probate records were lost. Tax records complied by Carl and Florence Main, list Eli, Elijah, Eli Jr., and David Edwards as property owners in Delaware Co. In 1836 Eli bought an additional 131 acres from Ewing and Stanberry, which he sold in 1840 to James Mayfield; then about 1842 he and part of his family moved to Jackson Co. IA. Abstracts of original entries for Jackson Co. show on 11 Nov. 1845; Eli Edwards purchased 80 acres in Sect. 7, Twp. 85, and on the same date another 80 acres in Sect. 8, Twp. 85 were purchase at the price of $1.25 an acre. The 1850 Jackson Co. Iowa census lists Eli Edwards, his wife, Hannah, and their son, Eli Jr., his wife, Juliana, and their children living together in the same house. 1850, Farmers Creek Twp.
