Notes
a. Note:   William Leeming, Jr. was a blacksmith by trade. William Leeming, Jr. is listed in the May 1, 1885 US Federal Census for Detroit, Becker, MN. Age is 31 years old and birthplace listed as Canada. 1910 US Federal Census lists William Leeming Jr., as 56 years old, residing in Monroe, Snohomish County, WA, page 27B. 1920 U.S. Federal Census lists William Leeming Jr., as 66 years old, residing in Everett, Snohomish Co, WA, page 5b. Becker County - "Brining it all together" Military: The Civil War display contains uniforms, medals, and weapons used during that period of time. An interesting item to note is the poster (in the uniform case) that provides an enlisted man $300 and a weapon upon mustering into the army as well as a promise that he would be able to retain his weapon after serving in the war. The drawing on the back wall is of the famous Camp Sumpter (Andersonville) prison. The World War I display has uniforms, medals, weapons (and ammo) as well as examples of the canteens and rations used by our boys. The flag of stars was made by Mrs. Lewis and represents each of our Becker county boys that enlisted (1,254) and those who died (54). Uniforms, Medals, Weapons (ammo) and field rations are also part of our World War IIdisplay which also includes German, Nazi, and Japanese items. Lewis Parlor -- "What DID we do before TV?" The games/toys in this display (Checkers, Scrabble, Aggravation), Marbles, Pic--up--sticks, Dolls/buggies, Tea sets, etc., represenet bits and pieces from years gone by. Before electricity and TV,it was necessary to use the imagination for an entertainment resource. One--on--one games, like Checkers, were often seen as a typical evening family activity. Ball and Chain: Around 1905, the City Council wanted to deter hobos from making a long--term stop in Detroit Lakes. What started as a joke, soon became a very efficient means of control. Hobos were put in irons, placed in the middle of the street down by the railroad tracks until after the train passed through town and then returned to the jail. The word soon spread "don't stop in that town or they'll put you in the chain gan." It was very effective!
