Notes
a. Note:   BRIEF SKETCH ABOUT JOHN NICOLAI JOHN NICOLAI came to America from Germany at some time before 1864, the
year of his marriage. Exactly when, under what circumstances and from what
part of Germany, none of the grandchildren now surviving ever learned. They do recall that he was a religious man, who loved to read Bible stories to his young grandchildren when they visited at his home. They have the impression, also, that he was a charter member of the Lutheran church in rural
Hopkins, one of its founders, and a strong supporter of it.
A tombstone on the family plot in the church cemetary bears the name
Godfied Nicolai and the dates 1798-1881. This was doubtless the father of John and suggests that the father probably either came to America with John or followed him here. John had a sister in America also and some cousins, as surviving grandchildren recall from family reunions years back and from the celebration of the golden wedding anniversary of John and Susanna Nicolai in the summer of 1914.
