Notes
a. Note:   " In 1826, with six children, Adam teamed up with a man named Wilkins and set out [ from Virginia] with their families for Newark, Ohio. Each man had a horse and Adam owned a wagon which they covered for the trip. At some town short of their destination Wilkins wanted to stop and settle. Adam was determined to go on to Newark but could hardly do so if Wilkins withdrew his horse. They went to the magistrate who decided Wilkins should stick to his agreement. Later when the families were down to one dollar, two of the boys who were walking behind the wagon found a pocketbook containing four dollars, a shilling, and a order for a barrel of salt. The purse and contents were kept a year in case the owner was found. Adam and Wilkins rented and farmed in partnership until 1831 when Saum bought 160 acres of military land at $1.25 an acre in Knox County, one mile south of Centerburg. In 1847 he traded this for land in Van Wert County. A farm of 80 acres one mile northwest of Middle Point, Ohio. The oldest son, Levi was only 12. Sarah was only 3 when they left Virginia. Adam and Margaret bought 88.18 acres in Van Wert County and lived out their lives here. They paid Solmon Longsworth $550.00 for the land. They had sold the land in Knox County for $2400 to an Amos Harris. When Adam and Margaret died the 88.18 acres were divided among their 12 children." Source unknown From History of Van Wert County, Ohio and Representative Citizens, edited by Thaddeus Stephens Gilliland, page 692. "Adam Saum was born in 1795 in Shenandoah County, Virginia, and was a son of Nicholas Saum, who was born in Germany and came to the United States when 18 years of age. Nicholas Saum first settled near Richmond, Virginia, and later moved to Shenandoah County. that State. where he was first married. Altogether he was married four times and became the father of 22 children, the father of our subject, Adam Saum, being the youngest. Margaret (Miller) Saum, the mother, was a daughter of George Miller, who served during the entire Revolutionary War. During three years or this period he was a captive of the Indians ; when he finally escaped he rejoined the patriot army; he was at Valley Forge, during the winter of 1777-78 and at the siege of Yorktown. For his captain, Mr. Miller had that noted Indian fighter and frontiersman, Daniel Boone. In consideration of his loyal services, the government gave him land where Little York, Pennsylvania, now stands. Adam Saum was reared and educated in Virginia and there was married. In 1826 he came to Ohio, at that time being the father of six children. Later seven more children were born to him. Adam Saum died in 1855 and his wife two years afterward."
