a. Note:   Martha Jane applied for and received a widows pension at the rate of $12.00 per month commencing Sept., 19. 1908. Case No 663374 Columbus agency Issued Oct 2d 1908. It was increased to $40.00 per month effective June 4, 1928. Obituary Martha Jane, daughter of George and Mary Longwell, was born on July 19, 1851, in Delaware county, Delaware, O. When but a child of five months she migrated in a covered wagon with her parents to Van Wert County. At that time there was but one other family in Jackson Townshi Her first education was obtained in a little log school house erected by her father in the wilderness on their farm. She grew to womanhood in Van Wert county and was united in marriage with Thomas W. Sterling on March 25, 1868. To this union was born eight children. Her dear husband, a daughter, Mrs. Malinda Armstrong and an infant son preceded her to the spiritual world. Mrs. Sterling was a loving mother, a woman of good moral character, a good citizen and neighbor. She was always ready to help all who were in need and will be greatly missed by her dear ones, church and community. She joined the church at an early age and was active and faithful until the end. She was prepared to go and said, "The Lord is my Shepherd. I do not mind suffering because Jesus suffered." Her direct survivors are four daughters, Mrs. Emma Ashbaugh, Van Wert; Mrs. Margaret Klinger, Defiance, Mrs. Eva Snodgrass, Toledo and Mrs. Hattie Derwort, Middle Point; two sons, Charles and Frank Sterling both of Middle Point; a sister, Mrs. Lucy Weldy of Middle Point; one brother Charles Longwell, Middle Point, 21 grand children and several great-grandchildren. Van Wert Daily Bulletin, Oct 24, 1932 "Mrs. Martha Sterling, highly esteemed resident of Middle Point, died Saturday night at her home. Mrs. Sterling had been in ill health for a number of months, but her condition did not become serious until several days ago when she suffered injuries in a fall at her home. Mrs. Sterlling was aged 81 years and was a native of Delaware county. she resided in Jackson township for many years before removing to Middle Point. Among her direct survivors are four daughters, Mrs. Hattie Derwort, of Middle Point, Mrs. Emma Ashbaugh, of near Van Wert, Mrs. Margaret Klinger, of Defiance, and Ms. Emma Ashbaugh, of Toledo; two sons, Charles Sterling, of Jackson township, and Frank Sterling of Middle Point; one sister, Mrs. Lucy Weldy, of Jackson township, and a brother, Charles Longwell, of Jackson township. The funeral service will probably be held Wednesday afternoon at 1:30 o'clock, at the Methodist Episcopal Church, in Middle Point, of which she was a devout member.
