Note:   from "THE HISTORY OF VAN WERT AND MERCER COUNTIES, OHIO" published in 1882 William Thomas Sterling, one of the substantial farmers of this township, was born in Knox County, Ohio in the year 1839, and came to Jackson township in Van Wert County in the year 1865, where he settled on section 31. Three years later he married Martha J. Longwell, George and Mary Longwell's daughter. Together they reared five children. He is now living in section 32. Sterling Enlisted from Union County, Ohio Aug 6th 1862 and was mustered into the United States service at Delaware, Ohio Aug 19th 1862, as a private of Company "K" 96th Regt. Ohio Volunteer Infantry under Captain Horatio C. Hamilton & Col. Jos. W. Vance. Later N. K. Brown to serve three years or during the war - He was mustered out & HONORABLY DISCHARGED July 17th 1865 at Mobile, Alabama on account of the close the war. The Regiment was assigned to the 2nd. Brig. 1st, Div. 13th Corp's Dept of the Gulf & Participated in the following engagements- -----------Page 2---------- Chickasaw Bayou, Miss--Fort Himmal, Ark- Post, Ark-Fort Gibson, Miss- Champion Hill, Big Black River. Siege of Vicksburg- Siege of Jackson,- Carrion Crow Bayou- La.- Red River Exposition- including Cane River- Sabine Cross roads, Monett's Bluff & Clankerville, La. Siege of Mobile, Ala. including Fort Blakely & Spanish Fort Whistlers Sta. & others--- This is a synopsis of the Army Record of Wm T. Sterling- Written by his wife Martha S. on Sept. 20, 1897 "It was during the Siege of Vicksburg (May 18 - Jul 4, 1863) that Private Sterling fell ill, causing him to spend an extended period of time in the hospital. After receiving a furlough he was reported as being absent without leave but this was changed when it was learned that he was back in the hospital in Memphis, Tenn. On the affidavit to origin of disability sworn before the clerk of courts in State of Ohio County of Union one Frederick Beltz, of Allen Co., private of Co. K 96th Reg Ohio Vols. duly sworn declares in relation to the aforesaid claim that his age is 37 yrs; that he is the identical person who served as a private in Co. K, 96th Reg Ohio Vols. that on or about the 1st day of August 1863 while in the line of duty, and without fault or improper conduct on his part, at or near Vicksburg, State of Mississippi, said soldier incurred rheumatism and was sick beside, that affiant was present and frequently saw the said Sterling and affiant believes that said Sterling was left at Vicksburg when said regiment left Vicksburg and went to Mobile Alabama at Fort Gaines and Morgan and affiant does not remember of said Sterling ever joining the Regiment again. In a letter dated July the 1, 1885 Hon. C. Black Com. of Pensions: in regard to enquiry in regard to what caused his disease I cant tell without it was laying on the damp ground and the hardship of camp life. Yours Fred Beltz (sic) Middle Point Van Wert Co Ohio, June 28th 1886 Commissioner of Pensions Sir: I have been persconaly acquainted with Wm T Sterling since Dec. 1865 untill the fall of 1876 he moved away from here to Indiana up to that time I saw him nearly every week was here a number times up to the time he moved back in fall of "79 cince then I have been persional with him his health has ranged about the same during all the time. Wm. T. Sterlings health is run down with cronic Disease and Rheumiatis so he is unable to be out of house and unable to walk the greater part of the time. He is at this time unable to perform any manuel labor.Respectfully, Thos. B. Bell absent without leave but this was changed when it was learned that he was back in the hospital in Memphis, Tenn. He arrived Sunday night, to visit his brother, Thomas, who was very ill, but come too late to find him alive. He died last Sunday at ten p.m. His remains were laid to rest in the Ridge cemetery last Wednesday. Funeral services were held at the Grace church. May he rest in the Lord.
