a. Note:   From the "History of Van Wert and Mercer Counties, Ohio" David Sterling, Co.F, 31st O.V.I., Private in Civil War Enlisted December 1861, Discharged July 1865. History Organized in the summer of 1861, under Colonel Moses B. Walker, it served that fall and part of the winter in Kentucky. It was afterwards moved to the Army about Pittsburg Landing, and took part in the siege of Corinth. The Regiment continued in Tennessee until Buell's campaign in Kentucky, and was at Perryville. It later did good service at Stone River, Chickamauga and Mission Ridge. The Regiment went north on veteran furlough and returned to take part in Sherman's march to Atlanta, to the sea, and up through the Carolinas. Moved to Louisville, Ky., June 5, and did duty there till July. Mustered out July 20, 1865. Regiment lost during service 2 Officers and 77 Enlisted men killed and mortally wounded and 1 Officer and 153 Enlisted men by disease. Total 233. David Sterling died 6 Oct 1874 in Jackson Twp., aged 31y 1m 26d. white, married, occupation: farmer, cause of death: dropsy of the heart, birth place: Knox County, Ohio.
