James used to keep pigeons in his back yard. His sons James and Walter would both take a timer and timed each pigeon they set free to see how far the would fly. Each were tagged, and the furthest they flew was about a mile and a half. Ellen used to stand there with a tin of corn, which she shook to entice the pigeons to return home. James was a strict father who used to use a leather strap across the childrens hands when they mis-behaved. He told the children to be in for 9pm, if they were one minute late he would strap them, this carried on even when they were 21 years old, they had to be back for 9 even at that age, if not he would be out on the street waiting for them with his strap! James worked the week days in Barrow-in-Furness for a while, when there was no work available to him in Manchester. He was an Iron Moulder. Need to see if I can find the foundry in Barrow where he may have worked. (It could be Vickers Ship Builders - ask Grandad)
