They used to have a whipping, 'strapping belt' that they used to correct/punish I and Troy which always was hung in a prominent place, as a reminder. When I was about 12 or 13, I and and Troy had enough of that belt, so we removed it from it's prominent place and proceeded to cut it into 100's of little pieces. After that, there were no punishments by this belt nor any other 'strapping belts', corporal punishment had been abandoned by my parents.[A.M.S.]

He was 12 years 1 month and 8 days older than Opal Gladys. I was born Jan 16, 1938; 6 months and 27 days later.
Otha was 28 Years, 9 Months and 16 Days old when I was Born.
Otha smoked cigarettes of various brands ("roll your own" and many types of commercial / store bought brands) as long as I was aware, he did cut down on his smoking habit in his last years.
Troy and I had a joke about his birth Date, one day late and he would have been an "April Fool".
SSDI ( Social Security Death Index ) has birth Date of March 21, 1909 { This is Incorrect }. Birth Date is March 31, 1909.
Otha served in the Civilian Conservation Corp, sometime during his service he was assigned to the camp kitchen. While there he learned that the "Steak" they had been served was "horse", he never ate another "Steak" again. He did eat hamburgers though. "The Civilian Conservation Corps, or CCC, was one of several programs designed to help the country recover from the economic depression that followed the 1929 stock market crash. The CCC started in 1933 and was open to young men age seventeen to twenty-one years of age. Over 4,500 CCC camps were established throughout the United States, employing more than a half million men. Corpsman are credited for planting three billion trees, building bridges, tending to soil conservation, and many other well-needed tasks. Men were sent to camps, often far from home, where they were assigned jobs and lodging. They were expected to send $25 of the $30 monthly salary home to their family." [The Civilian Conservation Corps, proposed by President Franklin Roosevelt, operated nationwide between 1933 and 1942. it provided outdoor employment for 2.5 million young men working out of nearly 3,000 camps. The camps of 200 men each were supervised by the United States Army and the work projects by the departments of Agriculture and Interior, in cooperation with the state.]
Otha, sometime in the early 1940 's farmed some land in East Texas; This was on his Grandfather George W. Thomason's 'owned land' and his Uncle Andrew Thomason's 'sharecrop' land.
My Father did not serve in the Military in World War II, although he was called up for the draft in early / mid 1944 or 1945. The war ended before he had to serve. I remember him coming home and telling 'Mom' he had passed the physical. I have copy of Exam. At about this time my father worked for a Rancher in Mitchell County, Texas; I remember him coming home with cow blood on his clothes from dehorning cattle. My Father's Formal Schooling, never went beyond second grade. In all his endeavors, he was mostly self taught or had a minimum of Training; He was pretty good at anything he tried to do.
My Father was an Automobile mechanic for many years, before going into the oilfield. (He went to work in the Oilfields with his brother Elbert Olen at Jayton, Kent County, Texas in the 1950's); he shared mechanic working space (at various times) with his brother Parvin Lee [Uncle Parvin had a radiator repair business with my Father, mid/late 1940's] and my Grandfather Mack Alvie Walls in Colorado City, Mitchell Co., Texas; before going into the Oilfield as a deck hand(swamper) on a Oil Drilling Rig, for his brother Elbert Olen Scarborough (an Oil Rig Driller) in Jayton, Kent County, Texas. [Note: An Oil Well Driller had his own crew, was the crew boss and he and his crew worked a
minimum of a 8 Hr. shift, Seven days a week on a Oil Drilling Rig. The Oil Rig Driller was responsible to the Tool Pusher. The Tool pusher was responsible for all the crews of a Oil Well Drilling Rig, as well as the overall operation of the Oil Drilling Site. The only time off for the Oil Drilling Crews, from the daily workload, was when they were between Oil Well Drilling jobs or could find a person to substitute for them; the substitute received their pay, they received no pay. Note 1: Pay per hour, was in the range of $4.00 to $8.00. {Good to Very Good pay per hour, for this time period.} Note 2: There were none or very few health, or other benefits for Oil Field Workers during this time period.]
When Otha had a garage in Colorado City, Texas there was a 1942, 'Yellow' Mercury Convertible that someone had left in his garage (unable to pay the repair charges), this is the auto that I learned to shift the gears, on a manual transmission; I never drove this auto, just learned to shift gears. There was also a Model 'A' Ford, parked in front of the garage, that I used to play within. During this time, I spent a lot of time as a 'gofer'; i.e. go for parts, go for cokes, go for tools, go for the broom, etc.
Nuts of all kinds at Christmas:
  Thanksgiving / Christmas Salad:
Otha could not wear a Mechanical Wristwatch, a Mechanical Wrist Watch would only last a few days and then would stop working. His Father had the same type problem, his Father always used a Pocket Watch attached to his trousers. The watch not working had to do with magnetism of the Human body?
He died at ({West Texas Medical Center}{Humana Hospital}{Abilene Regional Medical Center}), 6250 Hwy. 83/84 at Antilley Road, Abilene, Taylor County, Texas. (Note: Hospital has had several names.) My Mother [Opal Gladys] and I were with him when he passed away. Death due to old age and staphylococcus infection. Troy, Joan and Tina Jean Scarborough arrived at the Hospital shortly after his death. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- FEDERAL POPULATION SCHEDULES

The Dust Bowl or the Dirty Thirties was a period of severe dust storms causing major ecological and agricultural damage to American and Canadian prairie lands from 1930 to 1936 (in some areas until 1940). The phenomenon was caused by severe drought coupled with decades of extensive farming without crop rotation, fallow fields, cover crops and other techniques to prevent erosion. Deep plowing of the virgin topsoil of the Great Plains had killed the natural grasses that normally kept the soil in place and trapped moisture even during periods of drought and high winds. During the drought of the 1930s, with no natural anchors to keep the soil in place, it dried, turned to dust , and blew away eastward and southward in large dark clouds. At times the clouds blackened the sky reaching all the way to East Coast cities such as New York and Washington, D.C. Much of the soil ended up deposited in the Atlantic Ocean, carried by prevailing winds which were in part created by the dry and bare soil conditions itself. These immense dust storms-given names such as "Black Blizzards" and "Black Rollers"-often reduced visibility to a few feet (around a meter). The Dust Bowl affected 100,000,000 acres, centered on the panhandles of Texas and Oklahoma, and adjacent parts of New Mexico, Colorado, and Kansas. The Dust Bowl was an ecological and human disaster caused by misuse of land and years of sustained drought. Millions of acres of farmland became useless, and hundreds of thousands of people were forced to leave their homes; many of these families (often known as "Okies ", since so many came from Oklahoma) traveled to California and other states, where they found economic conditions little better than those they had left. Owning no land, many traveled from farm to farm picking fruit and other crops at starvation wages. Author John Steinbeck later wrote 'The Grapes of Wrath' , which won the Pulitzer Prize , and CiD C/iD'Of Mice and Men' about such people.
