Note: Opal Gladys Walls. My Mother was 16 Years, 8 Months and 7 Days old when I was Born. Blonde Hair, Very Pretty. [As I remember, She and her Sister Vera Lee were the only children with Blonde or Light hair, all other children were dark haired]. Opal never smoked cigarettes, to the best of my knowledge. The most opinionated person I have ever known. She was 'never' a happy person, always looked at a situation from a 'darker' perspective. Opal's formal Schooling never went beyond 6th grade. She made Snow Ice Cream: Made Ice Cream from Snow whenever it 'Snowed' in West Texas. Always worked in Laundries or Laundromats or did ironing for as long as I can remember. Worked for the Motion Picture Theatres, Palace and Lone Wolf Drive Inn for several years in C. City. Although she did some housework for a Mrs. Kirkpatrick [directly East of our home - Elizabeth Kirkpatrick {Her Daughter} paid the bills, Elizabeth worked at the 1st National Bank, in Colorado City] when we lived on the 'HILL' on E. 2nd Street (U. S. HWY. 80) near the Round Top Cafe. Grand Father Walls had a Garage behind his home {across E. 2nd St. (U. S. HWY. 80), from our home, and 'Dad' worked there for a while}. Later Grand Father Walls, moved just to the West of us (just before you get to Lone Wolf Creek Bridge on U. S. HWY. 80, E. 2nd Street), before he bought the home on West 4th Street. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- STORY Saturday, April 29, 2006. At the end of our Mother's funeral eulogy at Kiker-Seale Funeral Chapel, an elderly Negro woman sought out my Brother and I, she had a story to tell about Opal that she wanted us to hear. she insisted that we hold her hands as she told the story and stated that she now lived in San Angelo, Texas and that her daughter had notified her of our Mother's passing, and that she had driven from San Angelo to be present at our Mother's funeral and if she had been given a chance to speak at the eulogy she would have told the story below. 'After W.W. II in the late 1940' or early 1950's, persons of color had to wait until after 9 p.m. to wash there clothes at a laundry where Opal worked. This lady expressed her displeasure and concern over having to wash her cloth's at such a late hour to Opal. Opal apparently spoke to the owner/manager of the laundry about this ladies concerns. The owner/manager changed his policy on colored persons washing there cloth's and persons of color were allowed to wash there cloth's at any time.' Note: I remember people of color washing their cloth's during the day; but they were relegated to two washing machines at the back of the laundry, one on each side of an aisle containing about 12+ Ringer, Maytag washing machines per aisle. The laundry length was nearly one half city block. I worked there in the Summer's, etc. and helped ladies unload and load laundry baskets from there auto's into and from the laundry; I did have the use of a low (to the ground) four wheeled cart.[A.M.S.] Note: The laundry was set up with two rows of washing machines, etc. with a center aisle in between rows. There was a Maytag ringer washing machine on the aisle and surrounding this machine were three water rinse tubs forming a square; at the wall side of each row of washing machines was a table for holding laundry baskets, detergent, etc. Each Maytag washing machine setup had hot and cold water inlets for the washing machine and rinse tub's, plus a steam inlet to the Maytag washing machine for boiling hot water for extra dirty cloth's. The Maytag washing machine and rinse tub's drained into a open common floor drain [usually covered by wood slats], then into the sewer system. At the rear of the laundry were two machines for people of color. [i.e. negroes and mexicans] ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Mom and Dad They used to have a whipping, 'strapping belt' that they used to correct/punish I and Troy which always was hung in a prominent place, as a reminder. When I was about 12 or 13, I and and Troy had enough of that belt, so we removed it from it's prominent place and proceeded to cut it into 100's of little pieces. After that, there were no punishments by this belt nor any other 'strapping belts', corporal punishment had been abandoned by my parents.[A.M.S.] ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Note's: Note: In September of 2004, Edward Walls, his wife Patsy Ruth (Howard) Walls visited with Opal, at her home, and wanted to commit her to a Nursing / Rest Home. This was done without consultation with her sons and without consideration of her wishes. This visit was also, probably encouraged by her sister Evelyn Lucille (Walls) Northcutt. Note: The above is quoted without documentation per Opal Gladys (Walls) Scarborough? Opal is disoriented and in early to middle stages of alsheimers disease.(A.M.S.) January thru July 2005: Opal has become increasingly disoriented / accusative [alsheimers?]; The Colorado City Police Department has 30 reports from her beginning Jan 01, 2005 thru Jun 29 2005 of spurious reports of people trying to break into her home, etc. at 791 East 7th Street, Colorado City, Mitchell County, Texas. She has accused myself {A.M.S.] and her granddaughter Tina of stealing or destroying papers or paperwork; Her Car Insurance Records, Her House Insurance, Her Car Registration, Her Phone Book, Her Car Keys, etc. She is overly obsessed with paperwork that she thinks is missing; but she later admits finding at her home, or by the Police Department of Colorado City at her home. Troy and I do not know what to do with her, she does not want to live with Troy or I. She does not want to live at an Assisted Living Facility nor a Nursing Home. She refuses to have a Doctor check her health; She will not accept aid from any Federal, State or County resources for the elderly.[A.M.S.] Texas Department of Adult Protective Services has entered into the case due to excessive calls to Police Department about people trying to break into her home.(Aug 2005 - A.M.S.) Oct 02 2005, Opal fell in her home and was admitted to the Mitchell County Hospital. She was disoriented and unable to comprehend what had happened to herself. Oct 03 2005 Opal was admitted, Involuntary, to Abilene Pschychiatric Center, 4225 Woods Place, 79602, for evaluation of Alsheimers Disease. Dr. Francisco Vidall, her Physician. Oct 18 2005 Opal admitted to Northern Oaks Nursing Home & Rehabilitation Center. 2722 Old Anson Road. I ask her if she had seen her boys, she said she had seen you, but Troy never came around, cause of his daughter. I ask her if she ever talk to Aunt Helen , she said no. Then I called Aunt Helen tonight she said that she had talk to her. She was mad about you all getting her paper. Aunt Helen just has a cell phone now. Wanda From: cabletv1@att.net To: "whayslip1@juno.com" Subject: Re: Reply Date: Wed, 22 Jun 2005 Wanda Thanks for your E-Mail. Sharon and I are doing O.K., we have been to North Dakota earlier this month to see our daughter and son-in-law and to see the grandchildren; they also are doing fine. Troy and his wife and I were in Colorado City on Saturday June 18. I had received a call from the Police Dept. about her numerous callings to 911 about people trying to break into her home. They were never able to confirm breakin attempts when they responded to her calls. Her brother and sisters are also worried about her. Troy and I tried repeatedly to let us set up an appointment with a doctor, but she absolutely refused. I will have to find a doctor and make an appointment then take her despite her not wanting to go. I remembered seeing your name and I just found your mom's orbituary that your mother was Opal Scarbrough and your dad was Otha Andrew. I happened to be in Sweetwater when that was in the paper and I cut it out. My mom said that your parents were really good to come see her mom and dad and especially Granny after she was put in the nursing home after Roy died. My parents are back in Sweetwater now and I read in the orbituary that you live in Abilene. Mom said if you are ever over give them a call. Their phone number is 325-236-2615. Tammy
