Written Abt 1950 / 1960 Reference: Barbara L. Barnes ' Marion Griffin was born on May 17, 1836, and he came from central Tennessee to Arkansas. He and his family came first to Jacksonport, a boat landing that's on the fork of the White River, in Jackson County. Jacksonport is a few miles up the river from the town of Newport. By word of mouth of the oldest child then eight years old, the wife and mother, Martha Vermillian, died and was buried in 1867.
  To Marion Griffin, who was a Methodist circuit rider preacher, and wife, Martha Vermillian, were born four children. They are: 1. Nancy Elizabeth Griffin Wren was born January 28, 1859 in Tennessee. She married William Henry Wren on January 28, 1882. She died February 27, 1929. They are both buried at the Pleasant Valley Cemetery. in Cushman, Independence County, Arkansas. 2. James Griffin was born in 1861 in Tennessee. He married Molly Mason on October 29, 1885. She was born in 1865 and died in Tacoma, Washington. To this union were born four children and they are; a. Roy Griffin was born in 1888 in St. Louis, Mo. and died June 17, 1900. b. Macy was born on September 20, 1890 in St. Louis, Mo. and was drowned in the White River on September 20, 1900. c. Ethel was born in 1895 in Bethesda, Arkansas. d. Anna was born in 1895 in Batesville, Arkansas. James and Molly Griffin moved from St. Louis, Mo. to Cushman,Ark. in 1893. They lived in town for a short time, then they moved out to the Brookspring place for a time. They later moved to the Bethesda Community. In 1900, they were having church at the old Campground Church when Macy and some other boys went to the White River to swim and Macy was drowned on September 20, 1900. He is buried at the Campground Cemetery. The Griffin family moved from Bethesda to Batesville and finally to Tacoma, Washington. We've lost track of our uncle James and his family. The only information are a few letter along and word of mouth from relatives. 3. Sarah Jane was born in 1863. She never married and lived with her sister until her death, then she went to live with John and Nettie Wren, her nephew, for the rest of her life. She is buried in Pleasant Valley Cemetery. 4.Emma was born in 1865. She married George Haddock, who was born in 1867, on June 3, 1886. They both died in Cooper, Texas. They had five children and they are: a. Walter was born December 26, 1886 and married Myrtle Cuming. b. Jim (no Date s) married Pearl M. Kimey. c. Mary was born in 1894 and died in 1978. Luther Barrett. d. Martha was born in 1902 and married Buster Berry. e. Francis was born in 1904 and married Charley Berry. The Marion Griffin family later moved to Batesville, Arkansas (Ashley) township) Independence County.
  Marion Griffin married his second wife, Sarah Young Meeker, on June 24, 1869. She had a small girl named Lizzie Meeker. Marion and Sarah had four children of their own and they are: 1.Ella or Elvira was born in 1870 in Independence County, Arkansas. She was married to Thomas Richerson(sic) in Cushman, Arkansas. She died in Slaton, Texas. They had four children and they are: a. Tommie was born in 1892 in Cushman, Arkansas. b. Lewis was born in 1894 in Cushman, Arkansas. c. Edith was born in 1896 in Cooper, Texas. d. Cecil was born in 1898 in Cooper, Texas. 2. Edmon Lee was born January 23, 1873 in Arkansas. He married Willie F. Johnson, her father was named Bill Johnson, on February 16, 1899. She was born November 23, 1873. He died January 19, 1919 and she on May 24, 1961, They are both buried at the Pleasant Valley Cemetery. in Cushman~ Arkansas. They had four children and they are: a. Ross (no Date s) was killed in his youth near Springfield, a load log turned over on him. b. Mary (no Date s) married a Pool. c. Lizzie (no Date s) married a Rohescribe. d. Billy (no Date s). 3. George Alexander Griffin was born in 1875 in Independence County, Arkansas. He married Effie Thomas(sic) on January 8, 1902 in Granbury, Texas. She was born around 1875 and died 1965. He died in 1955 in Bowie, Texas. Ten children were born to this couple. 4. Fanny Bell Griffin was born in 1877, She married a Thomas H. Wall. They had four children and they are: a. Gibbs (no Date s).(sic) b. Hugh (no Date s) married Elsie Wren.(sic) c. Lizzie (no Date s) married a Haddock..(sic) d. Florance (no Date s).(sic) {Note: The above children of Thomas H. Walls are from his marriage to Allice Morrison.(A.M.S.)}
  Fanny Bell Griffin Wall and Thomas H. Wall lived at Brooksprings in 1894 and 1895 , From Brooksprings they moved to Needmore or Newport; then to Oklahoma and back in 1907. After a short stay, they moved to Texas with the George Haddock family.
  Marion Griffin died on March 26, 1880 in Tennessee and is buried at Pleasant Valley Cemetery. in Cushman, Arkansas. His second wife, Sarah Young Meeker Griffin married for the third time to a man named Quite(sic). To this union was born a son in 1886 named James Quite(sic) in Independence County, Arkansas . In 1909, James married someone by the last name of Partas(sic).'

  In October 1901, I began work for Uncle E. L. Griffin. I worked for him until August 1902 when I went to Jackson County with Aunt FANNIE WALLS, my mothers half - sister, to pick cotton. {Note: Reference E. L. Griffin is probably Edwin L. Griffin, son of Marion E Griffin and Martha (Vermillion) Griffin.}(A.M.S.) I came home and went back to school until February of 1903 when I went to work for the Missouri - Pacific Railroad as a station helper. I was later promoted to Engine Watchman and moved to Buffalo City, Arkansas for a short time in August of that year. {Note: Buffalo City, Arkansas is in Baxter County and is located near the present day Union Pacific Railroad, and S. H. 126 in Buford Twp near the White River.}(A.M.S.) In late 1903, I was stricken with (thyphoid - marked out) typhoid fever of which I almost died. After this, I didn't (do much - marked out) work for a time. I helped an uncle build a bridge across Polk Bayou to the Alvis Post Office and worked on the dam and locks (No. 2 & No. 3). In June 1905 I returned to work for the Missouri - Pacific Railroad as a watchman {Note: Sentence unreadable} in Oct, I was transferred to Hope Arkansas and stayed until 1907 when I returned to Cushman. I was still working for the railroad .On November 12 1907 I was married to Bessie Hendry. We lived in Cushman until Feb 1 1911 when we moved to Cooper Texas. Abt 1911 - Visited my Aunt Emma Haddock, Mothers sister. Visited Naomi Williams in Kopperl, Texas. We stayed two weeks and then went back to Cooper where we lived until late in 1911 when we moved back to Pine Bluff, Ark. {Note: Kopperl, Texas is located in Bosque County, Texas.}(A.M.S.) Abt 1914 - In 1914 we made a trip to Greenville, Tenn, on the Southern Railroad from Memphis, Tenn. On the return trip we stopped by James, Arkansas for a visit with Bessie' uncle Will Hendley. My wife Bessie and her sister Nora, made another trip to Greenville probably in 1919. {Note: Greenville, Tennessee in Davidson County, NW of Nashville, Tennessee.(A.M.S.) {Note: James, Arkansas is in Scott County, South of Fort Smith, Arkansas.}(A.M.S.) Abt 1917 - In 1917 during Easter. I made a trip to Cooper to visit Aunt Emma. I went alone. Martha Haddock was 15 years old. Mary was married and G. H. was a small baby.
