Note: ". . . He seemed older than his years as he had worked out since he was twelve years old. It was when he was twelve that his father died of cancer. I have always thought that it was a pretty young age to carry a man's load, earning men's wages through Spring, Summer and Fall, and going to school in the winter. From then until now, he had never stopped working at whatever he could get to do. Daughter F 1 6/12 WI WI WI Grandpa signed up as a carpenter to help rebuild after the bombing of Pearl Harbor on Dec 7, 1941. He left on Christmas night, 1941 and stayed until April, 1943. "We heard from Dad pretty regular and he was making good money. Soon he was made Superintendent of Streets and Roads in Pearl Harbor, instead of construction. He likes this work very much. He had done a lot of it in the Forest Service." -- From Mary's Memories. Admiral William F. Halsey, personally requested that Grandpa take on the job as Superintendent of Streets and Roads during the reconstruction of Pearl Harbor. Apparently this was due to the reputation built during his years with the CCC. This is according to youngest son, Jack Tinker. Grandpa was a big man, but what I remember most, are his hands which were very large. It seemed he could fix or build anything with those hands. He knew just about everything, too. Martin and I must have pestered him plenty following him all over as he did his work but he was never impatient. No matter what he was doing he always had time to answer our endless questions and find some important "job" for us to do--collecting used nails or picking up wood chips. He always made me feel the job, no matter how small, was vital to him so that I was pretty "big stuff." Its hard to recall Grandpa on this ranch without seeing him in a pair of overalls. I'm sure that's why Martin was so proud of his. -- Just a few memories of Grandpa at the ranch on Hickory in Fair Oaks.
