It was a beautiful rolling field, witha grove of great oak trees and a bold spring near by, and he furnishedthe labor to hand make the bricks with clay and straw. Rev. H. P. Hylton and the Rev. Joseph Weddle built the church at acost of $1200., $800 was subscribed by the congregation and $500 bythe builders. The Brick Church was the ninth church built by German Baptist (latercalled Duncard) people in VA. There was a branch of the church built in 1858 in Raleigh Co., WVcalled Crab Orchard Church. In 1895 the Brick Church was razed, and a clapboard church built nearthe site, and named Topeco, from the name of the post office near by,and was run by James A. Sutphin. In 1951 Topeco Church of the Brethren built a modern brick building,about one quarter of a mile east of the old church, and is now nearthe cemetary. Many of the first preachers were Hyltons: Austin and his son HardinPrice Hilton, Chris D and his son Daniel Price, Owen Barnhart and S.P. Hylton were Elders. John W. D. Hylton, A.N.
