a. Note:   Elmer Short was killed in Camp Forrest Tennessee during World War II. He was waiting for his discharge papers to come through. He had enlisted in the Army at the age of 37. (He entered the service in 1942) If person was still a Pvt at the age of 38, they were automatically discharged. While waiting for his discharge papers, he was called out to firing practice and was killed while he was out there. He left a wife and a four month old daughter. He was laid to rest in Coldsprings Cemetery, Kalkaska County, MI.

  IN MEMORIAM Headquarters 305th ENGINEER COMBAT BATTALION GENERAL ORDER NUMBER 5 1. On Tuesday 11 May 1943, Private Elmer L. Short, 36185774, Headquarters and Service Company, of this Battalion, lost his life as the result of a bullet wound, while participating in a firing exercise. 2. Private Short gave his life for his country in the struggle in which we are now engaged. It is my desire, as your Battalion Commander, to express deepest sympathy for his family and friends.

  On 12 May at 1830 hours full military rites were accorded this engineer soldier by the Battalion at the 305th Engineer Chapel.
  Obituary in Mancelona, Michigan newspaper: FUNERAL HELD SUNDAY FOR PVT. ELMER SHORT ACCIDENTLY SHOT Funeral services, in charge of the Geo. Puckett Post No. 264 of the American Legion, were held Sunday afternoon at the Schroeder Chapel for Pvt. Elmer L. Short of the U. S. Army. Pvt. Short was stationed at Camp Forrest, Tennesee, and on May 11, 1943, died as a result of a bullet wound, accidentally received while participating on the firing range. He entered the army July 27, 1942. In a letter to his wife telling of the accidental death of her husband, 1st Lieut. Robert S. Perry has this to say of Pvt. Short: "You have the deepest sympathy of the officers and men of this organization in your bereavement. Elmer was a splendid soldier and outstanding character. He was held in high regards by all members of this command, and his loss will be deeply felt by his many friends. You may rest assured that everything possible was done for his recovery. Your husband is as much a hero in our minds as any man that died on the field of battle. He was a true soldier and a credit to his country. "I wish to express my own personal sympathy in your loss. Please feel free to call upon me for any additional information you may desire." Elmer L. Short was born on May 8, 1905, at Long Lake, Ogemaw County, Michigan. He was united in marriage to Miss Opal B. Sparks of Mancelona, September 29, 1941, and to them was born one child, a girl, now four months old. The body was brought to Mancelona, and funeral services were held May 16 at Schroeder's Funeral Chapel. He leaves to mourn, his wife, Mrs. Opal Short, and baby daughter, Pauline Evelyn; his mother, Mrs. David Short; two brothers, Ashley and Acel, both of Mancelona; and two sisters, Mrs. Lena Fissler of Holly and Mrs. Clara Patton of St. Ignace.
  CARD OF THANKS We wish to send our heartfelt thanks to our friends and neighbors for their many acts of kindness and sympathy shown at the time of death of our dear husband, son and brother, Elmer L. Short. We also wish to thank the American Legion for their service and honor shown him, and Rev. and Mrs. Clayton for their sustaining service rendered.
