Notes
a. Note:   David Hudson served in the Civil War, 10 Cavalry, Company L, Fenton, Michigan, enlisted at age 18. and possibly George, as well as some of their brother-in-laws. He married Maude when she was about 14 years old. David served in the same Civil War Unit as Alan Porter, husband of David's sister, Clarinda Short. (David Short's civil war information was looked up by Don (dharvey@@perceptionet.com) Don has 88,000 Civil War records from all states.
David volunteered in the Civil war when he was eighteen years old. When David was in the Civil war in either NY or PA, he stole a chicken from a farmer in Maryland because the government didn't supply the soldiers with enough food. They went hungry lots of times. He deserted and came to Michigan and then he formed a Calvary group of Volunteers and recruited his brother George and some cousins. He then went to Tennessee with the calvary and fought there. He went by the name of Hudson Short when he was in the cavalry. He was going to be court martialed because of the chicken but they could never find him. He never could receive a pension because of that. Source: Dorothy Brandt.
David's Military Service Records say he was born July 18, 1838 or 1839 in Painted Post, Steuben County, New York, died in Grayling, Crawford County, Michigan. Places Veteran lived after service. 1. Hornell, NY, 2. Iosco County, Michigan 3. Frederic, Crawford Co, MI.

The following received from Lori in an email (LoDaBurr@@aol.com) She is granddaughter of Ruby, daughter of David Short and Maude Millard.
"My grandma had told me that he joined the Civil War when he was young. She tells that he joined as a "water carrier" as he was so young. I'm not sure what that means or if it is factual.
I'm also told by my grandmother that David made a great deal of money in Oregon in timber. When they returned to Michigan via railroad (as opposed to the covered wagon that they took out West), my Great Grandma Short sewed most of their money into her clothes in case of train robbery. He was a gre spender of money as well. She remembers him spending money with his buddies drinking and smoking cigars, even using bills to light the cigars. One night after being out, he came home and delivered an old piece of meat for Maude to cook. It was supposedly the only meat he could afford after being out with the boys which did not set too well with her. Then when he tried to snuggle up for a little affection, Maude swung the cast iron skillet at him. As Grandma tells it, she laid him out cold. He carried a scar after that and no more children followed.
Maude was not a great cook. One day she decided to have some fun with breakfast. She poured some pancake batter into a pan and then laid a piece of cloth on top of the batter. A second layer of batter covered it up. The kids were in on the joke. When David tried to eat the pancake, he couldn't cut it. With every attempt, the kids squirmed harder not to laugh out loud. Finally, he just laid down his silverware and said "Maude, you never could cook."
Grayling, Crawford County, Michigan Avalanche, July 5, 1928. David Short of Frederic, age 89 years old passed away in Grayling Saturday morning after a long illness. Brief services were held here Sunday afternon and the remains were taken to Frederic, where Rev. Earl conducted services and the remains were laid to rest in the Frederic cemetery. Those surviving the deceased are his wife, three daughters and two sons, Mrs. Axel Larson, Grayling, Floyd Short of Flint, Mrs. John Geren, Alice and Louie of Frederic. The Short family are having more than their share of trouble it seems, three deaths having occurred in the family so far this year. Ashley Short, a son passed away at Mercy Hospital the forepart of April, and a few weeks ago a little grandchild, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Axel Larson died following a short illness. Mrs. Short and the remaining members of the family have the sympathy of many in their misfortune. (David, Maude, and their son Ashley is on same headstone)
