Note: Allan was a Civil War Veteran and served in the 10th Michigan Calvary, Company L, buried in Riverside Cemetery, Shiawassee Co, Michigan. His death certificate states he died of Augrua Pictoris. It also states he was born in NY. It shows his father as Nathan B. Porter born in NY and mother as Clara E. Short born In PA. Informant was Frank Short of West Branch, Michigan.
Clarinda Short married first, Theodore Barber. To this union four children were born, three boys and one girl. Theodore Barber joined the service during the Civil War. While in the service he got acquainted with Allen Porter. One day during their conversation Theodore asked Allen Porter, should you survive the war and I don't, when you get out would you go and check on my wife and children? He said he did not know what would happen to them should he get killed. Theodore Barber died in 1865 during the Civil War with gangrene in his leg. His friend Allen Porter kept his promise. He was a man of his word. He did go back home and looked after Clarinda Barber and her children. They eventually got married on August 1, 1868. To this union there were four children born, two boys and two girls. They lived in Henderson, Michigan for forty years and were well respected throughout their lives.
