Note: Injured 3/15/1897 "while about to take the train at Dwight Way station. The train ran into and injured him so that he has since been an invalid." Clarinda Erskine's letter states that this is "John Doble" and that he is Mayor of San Francisco. (dated July 30, 1891)(also her c.1896 manuscript) [review of SF records indicates that he was NEVER MAYOR][see Bill Roddy's site: www.americahurrah.com] Frank Doble's manuscript indicates he was a blacksmith in Indiana, and formed a partnership with a Mr. Nelson, manufacturing blacksmith and mining tools. He bought out Nelson, and formed the Abner Doble Company, located on Fremont Street in San Francisco. California Biography (?Ed Alonzo Phelps) page 100: page about Abner. Includes that he traveled to CA from New York, around Cape Horn, and arrived 6/25/1850. (per charles clark smith jr; 4790 venner road, martinez, ca 94553) Notes from Su Jacobson (CASANFRA list): 1863 He was granted a franchise by the City and County of San Francisco, to operate the Folsom Street and Fort Point Railroad and Tunnel Company. Further notes for this: Abner Doble was granted permission to dig a tunn el from Broadway through Russian Hill. He never exercised this option. In fact, the tunnel wasn't to be built for another 80 years. Here is his tax assessment (1882-83): Merchandise 14,650, Machinery 2,500, Fixtures 450, Solvent Credits 1,779, Solvent Credits/Money 816, Furniture 300, Piano 200, Horse 75, Wagon 75. Doble who headed a mass citizen's meeting (Boss Ruef Era) to regulate business operations of the Potrero Commercial and Manufacturers' Association. He was corrupt. When a vote was taken to approve regulations, Doble called for the "ayes" and passed the resolutions without calling for "nays", despite the crowd's insistence.
