Notes
a. Note:   Ransom Marion Hayes was born 17 Jan 1862 in Union County, GA, in the middle of the Civil War. His father was Jeremiah R. Hayes who died at the age of 31 leaving behind five children. His mother was Nancy Lowe. She remarried some two years after the death of his father, possibly to a Foster.
There are two stories handed down concerning Marion's arrival in Arkansas. the two are most likely true and interrelated. According to Marion, hi step-father was extremely cruel. Secondly, he believed that he had killed another teenager in a fight. So, at the age of 15, he considered himself three steps ahead of the sheriff, and one step ahead of a step-father. He later learned the other boy hadn't died. Marion made a hasty departure from Georgia accompanied by his brother Joseph who was 13. The two boys made their way to Johnson county, Arkansas doing farm work for room and food and a little spending money. There were other transplanted Georgians in Johnson County, and the boys were readily accepted when they finally arrived.
Among the former Georgians was a family named Byers who happened to include a beautiful girl named Rebecca. Marion and Becky fell in love and at the age of 19 were married 24 July 1881 in Johnson County, AR. Seven months later they decided to come to Van Buren County and claim a homestead at Rocky Hill. Marion's brother, Joe, also homesteaded two miles away so they could be in frequent contact.
Marion and Becky had 11 children, Tragedy was no stranger at Ransom's door. George and twins John and Joseph died of diphtheria within a period of 10 days in June 1887. In 1905, after taking Walter to a boarding school in Clinton, the family was returning home by horse drawn wagon and had to ford Archey Creek. In the middle of the stream a flash flood struck them, and Pearl and Garner were drowned. Marion and Becky barely escaped with their lives. Eight months later Mary was born but only lived one month. At the age of 35, their son Oscar died in an automobile accident while visiting relatives in Oklahoma. Five of their sons lived to be adults. From page 75 of Biographies of Van Buren County, submitted by Sallie Parish and Julia Parish.
My mother (Veronica Emerson) told me a little more of the drowning incident which she heard from Maggie Emerson. It seems that Marion was somewhat stubborn. He was told not to cross the creek becaus it was dangerous. He did so any way. Halfway accros the wagon started to fload, and the floor board came up washing the twins away. Becky had long hair, so Marion was able to grab it and save her.
