Title: Interview with Dr. George Campion (42 Hillsdale Avenue, Newport Beach, California)
Publication: Cafi Cohen's notes of Dr. George Campion's taped family history; estimated tape date, 1980; notes date, March 20, 1998; transcript held by Cafi Cohen (375 Plancha Way, Arroyo Grande, California 93420)
Text: Extract of taped comments of George Campion (born 1918, New York City, son of Nicholas Campion and Anna Bacile) Graziano Campione married Sigismunda Fiscella Graziano came from Sicily to America two times. The first time he arrived in New Orleans with his brother Mariano on "election day,: as he came off the boat, a man put 50 cents in his hand and led him to a polling place. Graziano traveled up the Mississippi and eventually settled in Chicago with his brother, Mariano Campione. Graziano traveled back to Italy some time later and came back to New York City. It is not clear if he married Sigismunda Fiscella in Italy or in Sicily. George says: "I remember (in the 1920's) Graziano as a very active, very virile old man." He created a strong impression because of his age and agility. Graziano was self-educated. He was illiterate as a youth, and learned to read and write Italian in the Italian Army. Graziano's wife, Sigismunda, was completely illiterate. Nicholas, Graziano's first son, in accordance with family practice, was named after Graziano's father. Graziano worked in a "shirt factory" and eventually earned enough money to own three houses when George Campion was growing up. Sigismunda functioned as a secondary mother for George, because his parents worked all day. Nicholas, Graziano and Sigismonda's oldest son, married Anna Bacile, whose family had immigrated from Sicily also. Nicholas got a grade school education and then worked "at the lowest level in a dress factory." Eventually he became a cutter and pattern maker and finally a dress manufacturer -- primarily party dresses. Anna Bacile Campione was the "forelady" of the dress manufacturing concern and created styles; their partner was a Mr. Rosenblatt, who handled accounting and record keeping. Anna retired approximately 1934, became pregnant, and died giving birth to Myrna Campione, born by caesarian section. Anna Bacile's parents were Maria Badalamenti Bacile and Anthony Bacile, both born in Castelvetrano, Sicily. After Ann's death, Nicholas married again to Kathryn El Papa, known as Kay or Katie. George Campion (Nicholas's son, born 1918) attended PS 47 in New York City and James Monroe High School. He graduated in the class of 1936 and began college at New York University in 1936.
