a. Note:   Alternate spellings of her surname are Kautraux, Carto, Courto; it is spelled Quoitoux in Fulton County Death Record for son Andrew (Quoitoux returns no matching surnames in surname thesaurus). Maiden name and birthplace is shown as unknown on son John Edward's death certificate. Son Erbeant (Alfred U.) death certificate has mother's maiden name unknown but born in Paris, France. Sources give her birth as February 2, 1834 in Paris, France. A search of Paris birth records from January 17 to February 2, 1834 found Courtois as the only name close to Courteau with a Claire Achille Courtois (possibly a male) born Jan. 28.
  On board the ship Duchess D'Orleans which arrived in New York from Havre on April 22, 1843 is the family of Claude Cour (age 46) and Barbe (age 44). Children with them are Claude (age 19), Auguste (age 16), Eugene (age 12), Jeanne (age 8), Alexandre (age 6), and Jules (age 4). Could Jeanne be Josephine Courteau? This is probably the family of Francis and Barbara Cour living in St. Joseph Allen Co., Indiana found in the 1850 census.
  There is a Jacques Courtot, age 38?, Offemont, farmer to New York, who was issued a passport on March 26, 1843.
  Flory Book: Had a nephew named Joseph Courta living in Pepin, Minnesota 1864 and 1875 (see copies of letter from him pn page 283 of Flory History). Have a Aug. 25, 1871 land record for a Joseph Courto for land in Minnesota/Wisconcin.
  BIOGRAPHY: 1900 census: Parents from France. DEATH: Church record has death on April 7.
