Notes

BIOGRAPHY: Daughter Martha had the following memories at 50th wedding anniversary: Of taking a drink to Dad on a hot afternoon and watching him teach calves to drink milk; Of watching Dad butcher, milk the cows and squirt milk to the cats; and watching Dad watch the pigs eat; Of knowing Mom was always at home when school was out; Of doing dishes as my part of the bargain while Mom baked; Of brushing cows, piling wood in the basement, picking and canning pears, and hauling water from the woods with horse and sled; Of riding trucks, tractors and horses and of baling hay and combining wheat and oats; Of playing in the straw mow, jumping from beams, building tunnels, and swinging on hay ropes; Of riding John's carnival ride creations made from parts of wagons, ropes, wheels and a tree branch (no wonder Mom and Dad have gray hair); Of picnics in the woods, barn dances, piling in and out of our '36 Chevy, and going to the barn for Santa to come on Christmas Eve; Of going to the Monroe County Fair and playing on swings at the Ursuline Convent; Of visiting the Whitakers and lots of relatives; Of having special company and using the good dishes; Of Doctor Keene bringing Ray in a black suitcase; Of watching storms from the porch and being pulled through muddy Stein road; Of biting into warm, freshly-baked bread after school; Of mulberry and rhubarb pies and jams and having to "sit there" for dessert; Of begging to go barefoot for the first time in the spring and mulberry-stained feet; and Of Sundays always being special.
BIOGRAPHY: From a 30 June 1993 newspaper announcement: The annual Firm and Lucy Iott descendant family reunion and potluch was held June 20 at Carr park, Temperance (Michigan). Ice cream and decorated cakes were made by Louise Hempel of LaSalle to note the special anniversaries being celebrated by Sister Mary Kenneth (Alice Iott), a 50-year jubilatian in the Order of St. Ursula Sisters, and Sister Claire Marie (Gertrude Iott), a 60-year jubilarian in the Order of St. Ursula Sisters. Louis and Bernetta (Iott) Flory of LaSalle celebrated 64 years of marriage. They have eight grown children, 56 grandchildren, and 96 great-grandchildren. To honor all the celebrants, about 50 youth of the family paraded as clowns and characters associated with the events 50 and 60 years ago. Prizes were awarded and games were played. About 150 people attended the event from Ida, Monroe, and Newport (Michigan), and Toledo and Monclova, Ohio. Personal ancedote of Claude Flory: Papa (Bernard Flory) and I visited Uncle Louis sometime in the 1960s (possibly when I was in college in Dayton between Sept., 1966 and Dec., 1968). During a delicious dinner Uncle Louis described his extraordinary experience which he attributed to an UFO. He never saw it but there were lights and strange sounds emanating on his farm. I forget the year he said the experience occurred.
