He homesteaded land in Minnestota in 1876-he was also in Wisc at that time
In his last years, he leased his farm to his son John for one dollar a year in exchange to provide him with a room in their house, firewood to keep him warm and all medicines. Should their house burn down they would have to provide him with a room in town. So he provided for his own health insurance and social security.
