Thomas was theillegitimate son of Ann MUNN and John DAWSON though DAWSON's name doesnot appear on Thomas' Birth Certificate. John DAWSON was an Ostler onthe family estate. In the 1861 Census Thomas and his Mother, Ann are living with herMother Hannah who has re-married an Edwin HATTON, a local Saddler andHarness Maker. They are living in Oldfield, Ombersley. In the 1871 Census Thomas is shown as stilll living in Oldfield withhis Mother who has now married John DAWSON. There are 3 other childrentogether with Thomas then aged 11. They are (Clara) Fanny Dawson bornc1862 Ombersley, Sophia born c1864 Ombersley and John born c1869Ombersley. His Mother is shown as "Hannah" and Thomas is shown as"Thomas M" DAWSON (possibly M for Munn?). From here on, Thomasappeared to use whichever surname suited him at the time i.e. eitherDawson or Munn. In the 1881 Census is shown as Thomas DAWSON. They were living inOldfield Lane, Ombersley and he was a Farm Labourer. He is with hisMother, Ann and his Father, John DAWSON, a 52 year old GeneralLabourer and his brothers and sisters; Sophia is 16, John is 12,Alfred is 10, Harriet is 6, Charles 3 and Ellen 8 months. No trace 1891 Census. Thomas married Emily DYSON in 1891 - June 1891 DroitwichWorcestershire Volume: 6c Page: 542. At the time of son, Johns', birth in 1893 Thomas was described as aBoatman living at the Old Brewery, Rugeley. In the 1901 Census is shown as Thomas S DAWSON and living at theTalbot Basin in Brereton, Rugeley, Staffs with Emily who was then 35yrs old and 6 children. He is described as a 40 year old Coal Boatman.The children are :- Thomas 18yrs born Droitwich a Colliery Labourer -above ground, Emily aged 8, John (George) 7, Charles 5, Alfred 3 andAlbert 1. 1911 - The Basin, Armitage Road, Brereton, Rugeley, Staffordshire:- Thomas Shaw Munn 51yrs Head, a Boatman born Ombersley, Worcs Emily Munn 46yrs Wife born Ombersley, Worcs Albert James Baden Munn 11yrs Son, a Scholar born brereton, Staffs Maggie Munn 8yrs Daughter born Brereton, Staffs Harriet Dorothy Munn 5yrs Daughter born Brereton, Staffs.
