Ardys Crapo: Phelan Family, General Synopsis states: "Tradition says that Richard was a blacksmith and that the anvil he used was brought from Ireland to America by his grandfather. That he had smith tools in Borne out of an agreement dated 25 June 1844, wherein (missing language) make one hammer (sic) and two pair of tongs. The rental fee was one dollar per month and Henry could use the tools for five months. In this article of agreement (FLASHBACK, Vol VII, No. 1, page 11) the name Phelan was spelled Fielding, Phelon, and Phailan. Richard himself, in this instance, signed it Phailan. (Other spellings: Feelin, Feeling and Pheland have been found at various times).
Richard's anvil was given to my grandfather, Abijah Taylor Phelan, and upon his death it passed into the hands of his Step-son, Frank Swift, who in turn, gave it to me, provided I would make a trip to Farmington, Arkansas after it. However, when I arrived in California, the anvil had been borrowed by persons unknown and could not be found. Uncle Frank was positive it would be returned, but two successive trips found the anvil still missing. ========================================================= http://searches.rootsweb.com/usgenweb/archives/ar/washington/census/1850/pg00382.txt Census_Year 1850 Microfilm # 432-31 State AR County Washington, Prairie Township pg. 383 ---------------------Begin Actual Transcription---------------------------------- 22 22 22 PHETAN Richard 49 M Farmer 1,600 GA 23 22 22 PHETAN Hannah 44 F OH 24 22 22 PHETAN Jonathan 27 M Farmer IA 25 22 22 PHETAN Erven 25 M Farmer 300 IL 26 22 22 PHETAN Thomas 19 M IL 27 22 22 PHETAN Jeremiah 17 M Farmer MO 28 22 22 PHETAN Cyrene 15 F AR X 29 22 22 PHETAN Young 13 M AR 30 22 22 PHETAN Ziner* 11 M AR 31 22 22 PHETAN Marget 6 F AR 32 22 22 PHETAN Abajah 2 M AR
