Notes
a. Note:   1. From taped interview of Merna Hawes (Arthur's daughter) by her great-niece Linda Hartanov: Arthur Hawes was deaf from a bout of scarlet fever when he was a child, so he only took math classes in school and therefore could not graduate from high school. His hearing worsened as he aged. He was a farmer who "dickered" in real estate, buying and selling small farms in the area. He grew corn, wheat, soy beans and alfalfa. Their life was basically self-sufficient as they grew most of their food, butchered their meat, made their own butter, etc. Arthur died during the depression and had lost most of his wealth by the time he died as property values plummeted and all the real estate he had owned was worth very little. Arthur was tall and "skinny". 2. Census Information: *From 1894 state census, Parma, Jackson Co., MI: Hawes, Arthur, 26, m, w, husband, married, b. MI, parents b. Note:   Reference Number:1920 census 1. Divorce application was brought by Myrtie Hawes on 3 October 1917 against Arthur J. Hawes for "Extreme cruelty" (this was the common alleged cause for divorce on the books), the divorce was not contested and was final on 10 December 1917 "granted" "absolute". However, Arthur and Myrtie are again living together, listed as husband and wife, in the 1930 census. I don't know if they remarried or if Myrtie moved in with Arthur to care for him. I think they may have remarried as Myrtie received a share of Arthur's estate even though she is not named in his will.
