Notes
a. Note:   1. From a taped interview of Merna Hawes (Myrtie's daughter) by her great-niece Linda Hartanov: Myrtie was a quiet woman and was a good mother. They had a hired woman who came in to help her with the housework. She was married at the age of 16 and had her first child at 17. After her husband died, she lived with her daughter Merna Hawes Faust for about 30 years. Merna and her husband never had children. Myrtie was about 5'6" and slender. 2. From 1920 census, Vermontville, Eaton Co., MI (ED 112, family 87): Hawes, Myrtie, head, owns home free and clear, f, w, 45, Divorced, b. MI, father b. NY, mother b. NY Myrna, daughter, f, w, 15, single, b. MI, father b. MI, mother b. MI 3. From Vermontville Scrapbook #5, Page 55 (1957 - 1968): OBITUARY: MRS ARTHUR HAWES Mrs Arthur Hawes, 90, of 600 S. Main Street, died Monday at a Charlotte hospital after a short illness. She had been a resident here for 30 years. Survivors include a son, Ray, of Oakland California; a daughter, Mrs Lloyd Faust of Vermontville; three brothers, John and Joseph Benn of California; a sister, Mrs Margaret Throop of Jackson; five grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild. Note:   Reference Number:1920 census 1. Divorce application was brought by Myrtie Hawes on 3 October 1917 against Arthur J. Hawes for "Extreme cruelty" (this was the common alleged cause for divorce on the books), the divorce was not contested and was final on 10 December 1917 "granted" "absolute". However, Arthur and Myrtie are again living together, listed as husband and wife, in the 1930 census. I don't know if they remarried or if Myrtie moved in with Arthur to care for him. I think they may have remarried as Myrtie received a share of Arthur's estate even though she is not named in his will.
