Note: A document that mom has from the county superintendent of schools for Craig County, Vinita, Oklahoma 74301. That states on file/record of the office of the Craig County Schools that certifies an enumeration of Edith Garrett date of record January 22, 1922 District number 19, she is age eleven. This was an application/registration for school signed by parent/guardian J. Garrett. Mom used this to get her soc. sec. started. The enumerator in 1977 was T.W. Overstreet. In 1935 Edith passed the sup. of schools( J.W. Halls') written examination and was the only one to pass the eighth grade test and receive a diploma. After that she got engaged to Willie "Bill" Branson Taylor. She planted a watermelon patch to try and earn enough money for "underwear etc." to go to high school. It was during the depression and money was tight so she ended up giving the melons away. Bill was about five years older than her. Edith being about 14 at the time. They had already taken her mother away that happened at age seven. June 1, 1935. Given at Vinita, Oklahoma. Bill lives to this day five mile out of Vinita on a farm, five acres. March of 1996 he will be 81. He never married as Edith was the only one for him. That came to a tragic end when Bill and his sister Florence went to ask Jess Garrett Ediths dad for her hand in marriage. Jess said no and threatened to kill him if he didn't stay away. Edith went to her Great Aunt Annie Howard to live in September 7, 1937. Her Grandma and Uncle Paul took her as she had to flee from the hospital she worked at. She had been given that job by a judge. Her dad being put in jail for mistreating his family. She didn't realize that the legal age in Oklahoma at that time was sixteen which she was. After they put him in jail they took Tom and Earl and Jaunita to an orphans home. Located near Grove maybe Pryor, Oklahoma. Opal was persuaded to go to Bixby, Oklahoma by the social workers to go to a Catholic school Edith thinks it may had been a reformatory. She was fourteen and remained there for approx. four years. At age eighteen Opal was taken to the hospital to have her tonsils removed also she had rheumatic fever. The state could not pay the school any longer as she was to old for Federal funds. Edith had been asked by the judge, she thinks his name was Haynes and possibly related to the Taylors she was told this by Florence and Bills' mother this, if she would like to learn nursing that is why she worked for the hospital ( Craig County Hospital owned by Mary Ann Taylor this being told to her by Florence Taylor/Leighty ) Edith had met and married Floyd Willey (and had Jerry, just finding out that he had polio)when she received from the school a letter asking to come pick Opal up. They went to pick her up at the hospital. They had tried to pick her up earlier or visit after they had received a note in an envelope without a return address. The note was no bigger than a postage stamp. Opal had written a message that gave Edith the impression that Opal was desperate. Opal had given the note to a friend to smuggle out. The friend hide the note and mailed it per the plan. At that time they wouldn't let them even see her. The nun would not budge from the electric gates. Obit: WILLEY Edith Hazel (F-N) 19 Mar 2004 14B
