Notes
a. Note:   ROYAL SYLVESTER PITTMAN, eldest son of David and Hettie Johnson Pittman, was born on a farm south of Coleta, in Hopkins township, Whiteside County, Illinois, July 29, 1862. He passed away very suddenly in death about 9 o'clock Thursday morning, October 30, 1930, near his home, 1111 Second avenue, Sterling. His age at the time of his death was 68 years, three months and one day. His elementary education was received in the North Star school near his home in Hopkins township.
Mr. Pittman was united in marriage to Miss Harriet Mensch, on February 28, 1884, Rev. Emmanuel Brown, then pastor of St. John's Lutheran church, performing the ceremony at the bride's home, west of Empire and near to Round Grove.
To them three children were born, all of whom are living; Nellie A., wife of County Clerk Joseph Mann, Morrison; Florence, wife of Charles E. Manon, of near Prairieville; and Russell L. Pittman, with the Firestone Rubber Co., Akron, Ohio. Besides the bereft wife and mother and four grandchidren, Harold, Kenneth and Ruth Manon, and Josephine Mann, Mr. Pittman leaves to mourn his loss his aged mother, who, Providence permitting, will reach the ninetieth milestone of her life on next January 16; one brother, Milo (Milan) Pittman of Milledgeville, and one sister, Clara M. Pittman, who has lived with and cared for her mother for many years at her home near Sterling on the Lincoln Highway West. Mr. Pittman's father died Feb. 5, 1922, at the age of 86 years, and his brother Elwood on June 7, 1914, at the age of 39 years.
After their marriage Mr. and Mrs. Pittman lived on a farm in Hopkins township, moving to Sterling in 1891, and living in the present home, 1111 Second avenue, since 1904, 26 years. Mr. Pittman was a man of integrity, who had gained the confidence of his fellow men by his honesty and industry. He was stricken by heart failure after getting his car out of the garage, preparatory to going into the country to pick corn on the farm of Delbert Gould east of Sterling. He will be greatly missed in the community and especially in his home and home relationship.
