Note: Dubuque Daily Times, Dubuque, Iowa March 01, 1884 pg. 6, col. 2 ABSALOM CAIN He Pays the Last Debt of Nature at 7:45 OClock Last Night Mr. Absalom Cain died last evening at 7:45 oclock, at his residence, on Julien avenue. For some time he had not been feeling well, but was not ill enough to be confined to his house. Yesterday he was at his office on Seventh street, as usual, attending to his business. He left about 4 oclock and went home. Soon after reaching his residence he went into a workshop on the premises, where he has frequently amused himself in repairing and fixing all sorts of articles for domestic use. After working a short time in the shop he entered the house, and, staggering, fell upon a bed, but was unconscious, and despite the efforts of physicians, died at the hour mentioned above, surrounded by his family and friends. Mr. Cain was a native of Virginia, and was born August 28, 1813. He grew to manhood and was educated in that State, learning the trade of a shoemaker. He went to Ohio and lived there until coming to Iowa, arriving in Dubuque, December 13, 1840. Soon after coming to Dubuque he engaged in mining and worked at his trade of shoemaking, which he continued for a year. He then engaged in mercantile business with Henry Simplot until the death of the latter in 1846, after which Mr. Cain carried on the business with John Simplot until 1852. In that year Mr. Cain was appointed deputy clerk of the District Court, and then was clerk for the county judge until 1866. During all these years Mr. Cain accumulated considerable money, and became what might be called rich. He devoted the latter part of his life to money lending, investing money for others and dealing in mortgages and securities. When he came here he only had $300, but by industry and careful management acquired a competency. He was united in marriage to Caroline Faulhaber, a native of this city, November 17, 1862, who survives him, as well as four children, Fannie, Harry Lee, Frank R. and Addison, all of whom are in Dubuque, except the oldest son, who resides in Denver, Colorado. A telegram was sent to his son last night. The funeral will not occur until he arrives in Dubuque.1870 IA Census states profession as Real Estate Agent Value of real estate $30,000, value of personal property $3,000.
