Note: 8/1/00 I got his birth record from St. Cuthbert's Church in Edinburgh. No indication that he was baptised, but a record of his birth entered. Parents lived at 26 Carnegie St and father's occupation given as wright, mother's name as Jean Milne. According to report from Perth Library, his census record for 1861 gives his place of birth as Edinburgh. A hatter [see phrenologist's report] in Perth, where he married Elizabeth Dandie, whose father was a chemist on the High St in Perth. His business as a hatter failed after he signed a note for someone who later failed to repay him. Later his occupation was given as a commission agent. Their children were born in Glasgow, Perth, and Edinburgh, and he died of phthisis in Edinburgh at 4 John's Place, St. Leonard's. His wife died in Dunfermline in 1909. One puzzle is that his death certificate gives his mother's maiden name as Jane Buchanan. Would his sister-in-law have known for sure? 24/01/00 I found the record of his birth in Edinburgh in the Scottish Origins database and ordered it. His mother's name is given as Jean Milne on this occasion. 3/08/02 From the work of Sheila on the Cairnie Mortification. 1845 January 3rd - Petition by Robt.
