Note: Met his wife when they were both Sunday School teachers at the Old Tolbooth church in Edinburgh. He was a chemist with Duncan and Flockhart in Edinburgh, but he was supposed to have a weak chest so bought a chemist's business in Thurso. Christening record gives his name as Daniel, but name not seen after that. 6/11/01 From Marie@RPSIS.com "The only information I hold is very basic the Annual register and that tells you the date the Chemist was registered and his address. They came at a busy time! I missed the fact until now that the album was given to my grandfather in 1883 and that it was in Edinburgh (139 Princes St.). That ties in with some information I collected a few years ago but leaves some puzzles. I understand he opened in Thurso in December 1877 and before that my understanding is that David Dandie Cairnie (1853-1916), started as an apprentice with a firm called Dandie (either his grandfather or uncle) on the High street in Perth, and then worked at Duncan and Flockhart in Edinburgh, and finally started his own business in Thurso. The dates have some problems. If he started in Thurso in 1877, and got married in 1884 in Edinburgh, what is the source of the album? Could it have been an engagement present? Or, was it the empty album that was given to him and the photos were added by him? I think image3 is my grandmother but it must be close to 1914 since she looks much the same as in a photo I have with the boys, I judge, in thier twenties - in fact it looks like the same blouse and brooch. Images 2 and 5 look like my grandfather, and 4 might be the boys camping at Reay with the Boys Brigade. So, in other words it may be a collection of photos over a period of time. There are lots of people I don't recognise. The photo of D& R Cairnie Chemists shopfront is intriguing and I have asked John Williamson, who followed Uncle Bob in the business, about that. He has never heard of such a shop and says it is not the site of the present shop. My guess is that at one time his brother Robert who was also a chemist, was involved in some way, though I have never heard of him living in Thurso. There was a bottle dug up in Thurso recently which bore the inscription "D & R Cairnie Chemist Thurso". You can find correspondence about it at www.caithnessforum.org <http://www.caithnessforum.org>. Thanks for sharing these photos. If you have any more I would like to have them too. My regards to Bernadette and your folks. Does your mother have any ideas about the album? Alan
