Note: Pronounced Kuh' well and almost as one syllable, it's not surprising that our CALDWELL name is found without the D in many records. A.L. CALWELL, Book 1 (1833-1842), p.226; ABRAHAM L. CALDWELL, Book 5 (1853-1858), p.330; A.L. CALDWELL, Book 7 (1869-1875), p.312. Index to Greene County Stray Records 1833-1913. These are records of stray livestock. During the 19th and early 20th centuries, Missouri statutes provided specific guidelines for individuals finding and harboring lost cattle, horses, mules and other livestock. Before a person could take possession of the stray, he was required to post a notice of intent for at least thirty days and pay a bond to ensure that the animal would not be disposed of in that time. After notices had been posted in public places for thirty days, the finder was required to file a notice with a justice of the peace, who determined if the proper procedure was followed and collected a bond equal to the appraised value of the animal. After one year, if the animal remained unclaimed, half of the bond was returned to the finder. The justice of the peace submitted lists which were provided to the county clerk, who posted the information in the stray books. http://198.209.8.166/sheproom/Records/strtoc.htm 1843 Greene Co., MO, tax list, ABSOLEM L. The 1904 Plat Book for Greene Co., MO, shows the land in Section 24 in the name of A.B. CALDWELL, possibly Alice Belle, dau. of James Andrew. The land in Section 1 was in Ruth CALDWELL's name. Does this perhaps indicate that Absalom acknowledged Ruth as his daughter? Note, too, that Ruth's name was always CALDWELL while her mother, Sarah MALONE, was known variously as MALONE and as CALDWELL, and the very fact of Ruth's name could indicate that Absalom acknowledged that he was indeed Ruth's father. http://www.rootsweb.com/~mogreene/c1904.htm 1851 April 26 ~ 1852 July 1 ~ ABSALOM L.
