Note: in Dumbartonshire from Maldouen, Earl of Levenax in or before 1241.Robert de Colechon, apparently the first to take his surname from thelands, was one of an inquest held at Dumbarton in 1259 and again atDumbarton, as Robert de Culchon in 1271. He was one of the inquestwhich found that the daughters of the late Finlay of Campsie were thelawful heirs of deceased Dufgall, brother of Maldouen, Earl ofLevenax. As Sir Robert of Kylkone, he witnessed a charter byAlexander of Dunhon of the land of Akencloy Nether, c.1285 and asRobert de Colquhoun he witnessed a charter by Malcom, Earl of Levenaxto Arthur Galbraith, c. 1290. Umfrai de Kilwhone, Knight of theCounty of Dunbretan, rendered homage in 1296, as Vmfredus de kelquonwitnessed a confirmation charter by Robert 1 to Sir John Colquhoun,1308. About the middle of the fourteenth century, Sir RobertColquhoun married the heiress of Humphrey de Luss and thus becameLord of Colquhoun and Luss. Robert de Colquhoun witnessed a grant ofAuchmarr to Walter de Buchanan in 1373, John de Culqwon was sheriff ofDunbrettan in 1427, Malcom de Qulchone was a witness in Ayr in 1429and Alexander of Qulchom appears as witness in the same town in 1438.In 1497 John Culquhone of Luss sold a half markland in the territoryof Innerquhgapill occupied by a certain procurator with the staff ofS. Mund called in Scotts "Deowray". Adam Choquoyn was rector of Stobein 1513. Several of this name achieved distinction in Sweden anddescendants of Walter Colquhoun, a sixteenth century cannon-founderstill exist there under the names of Cahun, Cahund, Caun, Caan, Cahn,and Kharun. Hugh Cahun revealed the conspiracy headed by Charles deManay in September 1574, and lost his life in spite of a promise ofpardon. Johan Gottlieb Gahn (1745-1818) was one of the greatestscientist of his day, and Henry Cahun vulgo Cahn was physician to theAdmirality of Sweden in 1781. Duncan Ban spells the name in GaelicCothun.
