a. Note:   d graduated from there. During World War II, he worked briefly in the shipyards adjacent to Oakland and after the war, he took over his father's share of the Oakland Scavenger Company and worked as a driver in the company. He was not drafted during the war due to a heart murmur and color blindness. In 1953, he liquidated his share in the Oakland Scavenger's and moved his family to Napa, California where he became a farmer (chickens and livestock). In order to supplement the family income, he worked various jobs, as did his wife, Eugenia.
