Note: 1. Grove's surname at birth was Burghardt. When he moved out West, he changed his name to Burgett. His daughter's maiden name was Lydia Ann Burgett. Information on Lydia Ann Burgett and her children can be found under a separate listing by me at rootsweb. 2. 1850 census--Akron, Summit County, OH, Page 401 2/2, Line 11, census taken 27 JUL Grove Barget, age 44, born in MA, plough maker Calista Barget, age 43, born in NY Lydia Ann Barget, age 2, born in NY 3. 1830 census--Bloomfield Township, Ontario County, NY, Page 145 Grove Burdardt [sic] one male 15 to 20 one male 20 to 30 [probably Grove] one female 5 to 10 [probably sister Anna] one female 10 to 15 [probably sister Maria Hannah] one female 15 to 20 [probably sister Cynthia, shortly before she died] one female 20 to 30 [probably sister Electa] one female 40 to 50 [probably Grove's mother, Jemima] 4. Calista is living with her first husband in 1830 in Eaton Township, Madison County, NY. I have not located her in the 1840 census. Presumably, her first husband, Francis Stocking, was dead by then. 5. Grove and Calista's marriage date is listed as 1845 in "The Pratt Directory Revised Millenium Edition," by Jayne Pratt Lovelace, Compiler, copyright April 2001. Presumably the marriage either took place in Madison County or Ontario County, NY. 6. Grove's daughter, Lydia Ann Burgett, was born in Richmond, Ontario County, NY, as stated in "Historic Douglas County, Oregon 1982," published by Douglas County Historical Society, copyright 1982. 7. I have a copy of the actual town record for Grove's birth (FHL microfilm #250299). It states "Avaline daughter of John & Jemima Burghardt was born June 29th, 1804, Grove son of ditto was born March 18th, 1806." 8. Grove first purchased property in Ontario County, NY in 1830 (source is FHL microfilm #495854, land deed grantee index). In all the land entries his name is recorded as Grove Burghardt. I have not been able to locate Grove as a head of household in the 1840 census. Grove's mother, Jemima, is listed as a head of household in the 1840 Richmond, Ontario County, NY census, but no male within Grove's age range is living with her. 9. Grove's uncle, Lewis Willson, lived in Eaton Towship, Madison County, NY through at least the 1840 census, so this is how Grove might have met Calista. Calista was living in Eaton Township with her first husband in the 1830 census. 10. Grove's birthdate is also confirmed in a transcription of the diary of sister Maria Hannah Burghardt (not a copy of the actual diary). 11. Grove is buried in West Center Cemetery in West Stockbridge, Berkshire County, MA. I have a picture of his gravestone.
