Note: On Uriah Hix Cook's tombstone it is written: He held me by the hand and pressed it to his breast until his arms were folded in death.
Mary J. Cook Grandfather Uriah Hix Cook who settled in Oakey Streak, Al about 1845 lived there until the mid-seventies. We know most of his children married their mates while both were living at Oakey Streak, AL. It is not known when or where Uriah Hix Cook started his studies, but he finished at Transylvania University, Lexington, Ky in 1838. It is said that Dr. Cook gathered his family and belongings about 1872 going to Texas, where his son Thomas Richard and his brother John Pearson were living. They got as far as Georgiana, Alabama when word reached him that his Cook family had gotten into trouble. As a result of this Dr. Cook stayed in Alabama, and Tom returned to Alabama. Dr. Cook moved from Georgiana, where lived a year, to Industry, Alabama in 1873.
