Note: According to the 1907 Census Tax Assessor, he was born in Macedonia and living in Macedonia at that time. The Historical Record Roll of Petersburg, VA, Dec 31, 1864, says he was living in Braggs Store in 1862. The 1921 Confederate Soldierscensus says he was living in Forest Home at that time. The Alabama Dept of Archives and History has two Confederate pension applications for W.H. Luckie on file. The first is dated June 5, 1899 and places him in class 4. The second is dated February 8, 1918 and is application to be moved from class3 to class 2. It refers to his third class pension no. 9321 but this document is not extant. The June 1899 application records that he entered service as a private in Co. D, 1st Battalion, Hilliard's Legion on May 16, 1862 at Fort Deposit. He was honorably discharged on July 2, 1865. He did not desert. He was wounded at Chickamauga."He is now unable to make a living by manual labor on account of chronic Diarhor [?] contracted in service." At the time of application he is 55 and living in Macedonia, Lowndes County. [italics indicate handwritten portion]There are spaces on form for the probate judge,J.C. Woods, to certify that the applicant personally appeared before him and for two affadavits of witnesses. The witnesses swear that of their own knowledge they know that the applicant did serve asset forth in the application, did not desert, and was honorably discharged. The two witnesses were T.C. Perkins and A.Y. Autry, neither of whom could sign his name. There was also a handwritten statement "I hereby certify that W.H. Luckie thewithin applicant is unable to make a living by manual labor because of general disablities and chronic diarhora [or durrhora?]as testified by his physician. Frank Shackelford MD Pension Examiner Lowndes Co." Interestingly, when W.H. Luckiesigned his own name, he quite clearly spelled Luckie with an "ie." Judge Woods alternated between "Luckey" and "Lucky" until the last page when he finally spelled it "Luckie."The last page of the application is a schedule of property. It shows that he owned no real estate. Under personal property:1 Horses and mules.........................................................40.008 Cattle of all kinds.........................................................60.002 Hogs, sheep, and goats................................................. 5.001 Pistols, guns, etc........................................................... 5.00Watches, clocks, and jewelry........................................Household and kitchen furniture...................................50.00Bicycles and vehicles.....................................................Goods, wares, and merchandise.....................................Mechanical and farming tools and implements..............Total......................$160.00The February 1918 application requests that he be promoted from class 3 to class 2 by virtue of his age exceeding 70 years. His is now living in Butler County. It records his date of birth as May 9, 1844, and states that he has no proof positiveof his age and that no one in this part of the country can testify as to his birth. There is an affidavit of one witness, W.H. Shanks, Sr., who testifies that he has known W.H. Luckie for 52 years and believes him to be over 70 years. Theapplication and the affidavit are certified by J.P. Benson, Notary Public.
