Mr. Serrano was a charter member of the Immaculate Conception Roman Catholic Church in Old Town, where the rosary will be recited and Mass will be celebrated at 9 a.m. Monday. Berge-Roberts Mortuary is in charge of arrangements. Burial will be in the Holy Cross Cemetery. A great-grandfather, Jose Leandro Serrano, fought under Mexican Gen. Andres Pico against the Americans in the Battle of San Pasqual in 1846, two years before the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo made California part of the United States. Rancho Pauma, near Palomar Mountain, was a Serrano holding. His grandfather, Luis Antonio Serrano, was born in Old Town, and his father, Luis Serrano, was the last child of European ancestry born in Old Town under the Mexican flag. Luis Serrano married Sarafina Stewart, daughter of Jack Stewart, a Scottish lumber merchant. Luis Serrano also was the last of several generations of bullfighters in the Serrano family. He was a rejoneador, fighting from horseback, and regularly made the trip to San Francisco to appear there. There also were bullfights in Old Town in early days, family members said. As a child, Mr. Joseph Serrano attended the Old Town Mason Street School. As a young man, he was San Diego's best baseball pitcher. A scout from an East Coast team signed him to go with a professional team. "He had his clothes all packed," his daughter, Bernice Hansen, said. "But his mother, Sarafina, cried and cried, and finally his father told him he could not go. So that was the end of his baseball career." He worked in the house moving business when the houses were being moved by teams of horses, his daughter said. He also worked for the city of San Diego as a maintenance engineer in the street department for 20 years, retiring in 1958. Mr. Serrano is survived by his daughter, Bernice M. Hansen of Paradise Hills; two sons, Norman and Johny of San Diego; 14 grandchildren; 28 great-grandchildren; and six great-great-grandchildren. ***** The San Diego Union, San Diego, California, November 8, 1986, page C-10 and The San Diego Tribune, San Diego, California, November 8, 1986, page C-10 The Joseph A.
